Speciation of metals

Chromium is known in all oxidation state between 0 and VI, but is commonly found in oxidation states III and VI. Cr(III) species in acidic solution exist as Cr(H20)g ions and in concentrated alkali have been identified as Cr(OH)g and Cr(0H)5(H20) . These ions are regular octahedral. Cr(VI) in basic solution above pH 6 exists as tetrahedral yellow chromate, CrO ion. Between pH 2 and 6, HCrOj and the orange-red dichromate, Cr207, are in equilibrium. Under strongly acid conditions, only dichromate ion exists. Addition of alkali to dichromate gives chromate. [Pg.217]

The basis of many of the separations has been to convert Cr(III) to an anion by adding a complexing agent. Cr(VI) is already an anion (usually CrO ), hence, anion chromatography can be used to separate mixtures. An example is separations carried out in the presence of KSCN converting Cr to CrCSCN).  [Pg.219]

Pyridine dicarboxylic acid (PDCA) was used as a complexing agent for Cr to form anionic Cr(PDCA)2 The sample pH is critical to the separation. Optimum results were reported at pH 6.8. Both Cr(III) and CrCVI) were detected using UVA S detection and diphenylcar-bohydrazide as a post-column reagent.
