This chapter provides an overview of modern HPLC equipment, including the operating principles and trends of pumps, injectors, detectors, data systems, and specialized applications systems. System dwell volume and instrumental bandwidth are discussed, with their impacts on shorter and smaller diameter column applications. The most important performance characteristics are flow precision and compositional accuracy for the pump, sampling precision and carryover for the autosampler, and sensitivity for the detector. Manufacturers and selection criteria for HPLC equipment are reviewed. [Pg.109]

Formulations for nasal application need to be sterile and free of cilliotoxic substances. Solutions may be applied via pump dispensers. Nasal powders on the other side require special application systems like, for example, the Jetilizer [25]. This system follows a twin construction pattern with two nozzles. The capsule containing the particle-based formulation is opened by needles. A pump-activated air stream aerosolizes the powder in an equilibrium chamber. After passing a conical tube, the powder is applied with a high deposition rate to the absorption area within the nose. [Pg.181]

Here a - surface tension pa - atmospheric pressure 9 - contact angle of crack s wall wetting by penetrant n - coefficient, characterizing residual filling of defect s hollow by a penetrant before developer s application IT and h - porosity and thickness of developer s layer respectively W - minimum width of crack s indication, which can be registered visually or with the use of special optical system. The peculiarity of the case Re < H is that the whole penetrant volume is extracted by a developer. As a result the whole penetrant s volume, which was trapped during the stage of penetrant application, imbibes developer s layer and forms an indication of a defect. [Pg.614]

The Evaluation system is a Windows based open system through DLL, Dynamic Link Library, which provides great flexibility in evaluation and presentation of data. It also makes it possible to customise evaluation and images for special applications The time gates can be set after testing and there is a 256 colour range for amplitude. The software include FFT -facilities which enables measurements on used probes for parameters such as center frequenzy and bandwidth. [Pg.864]

Direct expansion is also possible wherein the refrigerant is used to chill the incoming air directly without the chilled water circuit. Ammonia, which is an excellent refrigerant, is used in this sort of application. Special alarm systems would have to be utilized to detect the loss of the refrigerant into the combustion air and to shut down and evacuate the refrigeration system. [Pg.99]

Brot Tiian movement becomes appreciable for particles under 3 microns and predominates when the particle size reaches 0.1 micron [13]. This motion usually has little effect in the average industrial process settling system except for the very fine fogs and dusts. However, this does not mean that problems are not present in special applications. [Pg.236]

Regarding the specific energy, i.e., the electric energy per mass, a major distinction can be made between today s aqueous and nonaqueous battery systems [15]. Apart from batteries for some special applications, there are... [Pg.18]

After these comments it is understandable that this expensive and life-limited system could succeed only in a few special applications, where the high energy and power density could not be achieved by other systems. [Pg.287]

In special applications people have built telescopes with very sparse arrays of mirrors in order to sample the resolution space with minimum number of mirrors. Systems like this may give greater angular resolution (longer baseline) but have less sensitivity due to the smaller collecting area. [Pg.66]

Quench Systems Quench systems are used for essentially all types of reactive chemicals. A quench system involves the addition of flooding quantities of water or other quenching medium to the reactive material the quenching medium might be a subcooled material such as liquid nitrogen or dry ice in special applications. [Pg.29]

However, the fact that industrial applications of polymer surface fluorination employ a fluorine/nitrogen mixture as the fluorinating agent complicates matters because fluorine gas is toxic, may explode when brought into contact with organic substances, and causes severe bums on human tissue. Moreover, the use of fluorine requires highly qualified personnel and special safety systems. [Pg.224]

The list of suitable applications also includes a variety of special-purpose systems, especially where high lightfastness and durability, but also high heat stability or other perfect fastness properties are a prime concern. This is true, for instance, for coatings to be applied onto aluminum window blinds. Bilaterally coated, usually in pastel colors, these aluminum strips are baked at 250°C or less and subsequently subjected to considerable mechanical stress. [Pg.534]

A short review on the development of laser heating in special applications under pressure has been published by Bassett (2001). A heating system to be used, with either ruby or YAG laser, under pressure in a diamond anvil cell has been described. Graphite to diamond and several silicate phase transformations have been studied. [Pg.536]
