The field ion microscope (FIM) has been used to monitor surface self-diflfiision in real time. In the FIM, a sharp, crystalline tip is placed in a large electric field in a chamber filled with Fie gas [14]. At the tip. Fie ions are fonned, and then accelerated away from the tip. The angular distribution of the Fie ions provides a picture of the atoms at the tip with atomic resolution. In these images, it has been possible to monitor the diflfiision of a single adatom on a surface in real time [15]. This angular dependence is different from the first-order perturbations so that the conventional teclmique of removing linebroadening in solids, MAS (see below), caimot completely remove this interaction at the same time as removing the first-order broadening. Because IPES maps the densities of unoccupied states, it is related to other techniques that do the same (e.g. STS and SXAPS). When used in conjunction with a technique that maps the densities of occupied surface states, e.g. UPS or ELS, a continuous spectrum of state density from occupied to unoccupied can be obtained. Just as in UPS, in which angular resolution enables elucidation of the three-dimensional occupied band structure, so in IPES angular resolution enables mapping of the three-dimensional unoccupied band structure. The size of teleseopes is eritieal to the seientific capability of the telescope. Many, if not most, observations done by telescopes are limited by the amount of hght collected from the astronomical target. Angular resolution is also often a critical hmitation to understanding the nature of the astronomical targets.
