There are large resources of potential food proteins (oilseed, yeast, leaf) which are presently unexploited. With the application of innovative scientific and technological methods these can become significant sources of food protein. In developing ingredient protein from plant sources, research emphasis must include studies to determine the physicochemical or functional properties of these proteins. 

The benefits of consolidation can include superior capacity utilization, the sharing of best practice process improvements, the elimination of overlaps in the distribution system, and the use of geographically closer plants for sourcing. Research and development and sales and marketing expenses can also be cut back by eliminating duplications in operations. Some non-traditional players (e.g., financial investors) have been able to slash their sales, general and administration costs by as much as 40 percent on the back of consolidation moves.

As mentioned in Section 6.5, all these modern food production plants are no longer relying on naturally available animal feed sources. The country entries contain unavoidable information gaps. This situation is due in part to space constraints in a work such as this one. By necessity, a choice had to be made regarding content, creating certain gaps in coverage. These holes are also a consequence of the fact that most primary-source research in the NBC field has focused on a limited number of states, mainly in the West. To a certain extent, this Western focus reflects the states that have been most active in the NBC field.
