Source activity

Table 15 shows data for several radionucHdes the y-rays of which are often used to caHbrate the efficiency of y-ray detectors. For a number of these y-rays the very high accuracy arises because the y-ray occurs in essentially 100% of the decays of the nucHde, and only small corrections ate needed to deduce the y-emission probabiHty. In other cases the accuracy is high because a number of careful measurements have been made. The y-emission rate from a caHbration source also depends on the decay rate of the source, and for these nucHdes the uncertainty in the source activity is often the larger uncertainty. [Pg.456]

Radioactivity. Methods based on the measurement of radioactivity belong to the realm of radiochemistry and may involve measurement of the intensity of the radiation from a naturally radioactive material measurement of induced radioactivity arising from exposure of the sample under investigation to a neutron source (activation analysis) or the application of what is known as the isotope dilution technique. [Pg.9]

To minimize experiment time, the highest possible source activity is desirable, with the constraint that the source line width should not increase sigiuficantly (maximum by a factor of 2-3) over the 9-12 months duration of the mission. Calculations and tests indicate an optimum specific activity for Co at 1 Ci per cm [42, 43], Sources of 350 mCi Co/Rh with a specific activity close to this value and extremely narrow source fine width (<0.13 mm s at room temperature), given... [Pg.55]

In Table II the sums of squared residuals (RSS) of Set I are found calculated by the TTFA type model solved by PLS. All 13 potential profiles were predicted from the 40 air samples, while in reality there were only 9 active. The first row contains the RSS s from PLS models predicting one source profile at a time, the second row from the PLS model predicting all the source profiles simultaneously. From the difference of the RSS s between the first nine and the last four profiles it is clear that in this data set there were only nine sources active. These results are Intended only to Illustrate what kind of information is provided by the PLS solution. [Pg.278]

Inhibitors of lactic dehydrogenase have been reported in commercial preparations of NAD+ and NADH (B4, M6, S28). The concentration of inhibitory substances varied from lot to lot. In a serum lactic dehydrogenase study with NAD+ from 8 sources, activities were found to vary from 145 to 75 units (B4). Inhibitors of lactic dehydrogenase activity have also been observed in dialyzates in uremic patients (W8) and in human urine (G8). The purity of available substrate can also effect enzyme activity. Schwartz and Bodansky observed that, in 6 batches of fructose 6-phosphate, all weighed to a 0.5 mM concentration, the actual concentration varied from 0.13 mAf to 0.55 mM (S14). [Pg.31]

The effect of dietary fats on hypertriglyceridemia is dependent on the disposition of double bonds in the fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oils, but not those from plant sources, activate peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-alpha (PPAR- ) and can induce profound reduction of triglycerides in some patients. They also have antiinflammatory and antiarrhythmic activities. In contrast, the omega-6 fatty acids present in vegetable oils may cause triglycerides to increase. [Pg.784]

Essentially, a user should be able to contact their excipient distributor and request a particular excipient, and the distributor should perform all of the sourcing activities, such as elucidating the exact grade of material required, if not already specified provide documentation generated by the manufacturer [product specifications or data sheets, typical C of A, material safety data sheets (MSDS)] and obtain samples of representative lots of the excipient free of charge for the user. [Pg.426]

The extent to which DOM abundance and composition can be considered as end products of microbial activity rather than as drivers depends on the relationship between source dynamics and community response time. At one extreme, steady inputs, stable environmental conditions, and long residence time promote a dynamic equilibrium state in which DOM characteristics can be viewed as the product of source-activity interaction. At the other... [Pg.488]

The predicted hardnesses given by both dislocation motion and source activation are shown in Fig. 8.2. Comparing this with the data on TiN/NbN multilayers, it can be seen that the rising portion of the curve is a fair fit to the data of Shinn et al. (1992). However, it is not clear why such a process might operate at a considerably higher stress than that required to drive dislocations across the interfaces, as discussed in the previous section and shown as the horizontal line in Fig. 8.2. Indeed the predictions seem more consistent with the data where little or no hardening was observed. [Pg.227]

Out-source activities—Don t try to do everything internally consultants, retirees, college professors, and graduate students can all be used to supplement your permanent workforce for critical tasks. Contract services are more available than ever and can provide calibration, maintenance, and analytical testing support. Contract manufacturing firms frequently can assist a firm with the validation of activities. [Pg.122]

The lifetime of CIONO2 is approximately 6 h in the lower stratosphere (< 30 km) decreasing to about an hour at 40 km owing to the increase in UV light. Figure 25 shows the key chemical interconversions of the chlorine chemistry in the stratosphere, delineating the molecules into source, active and reservoir species. [Pg.60]
