Some Additional Chemical Aspects

In this chapter we will consider some additional fundamental aspects of chemical reactions, i.e., how they occur, the driving forces behind them, and their dependence upon specifics of molecular structure and conditions of reaction, such as temperature and concentration. There are two aspects of chemical reactions which, though interrelated, are dealt with as separate topics. The first of these is the study of the reaction from its initiation to the point where the system seems to undergo no further change, called chemical kinetics. The second deals with the system after all apparent change has stopped, and is called chemical equilibrium. Following those topics we will examine some specific aspects of chemical equilibria involving oxidation-reduction reactions in aqueous solutions and combustion reactions. [Pg.145]

In this section, several PES studies on selected properties of PEDOT-PSS that are relevant to certain applications in organic electronics are reviewed. The unique initial-state binding energies of the sulfur atoms in the PEDOT and the PSS portions of the polymer blend make it possible to distinguish PEDOT from PSS within PEDOT-PSS films. We focus on the analysis of the elemental composition, the PEDOT-to-PSS ratio, some aspects of the granular morphology, and some additional chemical information (for example, an estimate of the doping level). [Pg.926]

The halichlorine project starts with simple pyridine, whose humble status as a commodity chemical is elevated remarkably by application of Bubnov s allylation chemistry28 (Scheme 15). This bis allylation reaction, when under kinetic control, leads strictly to the trans 2,6-diallyl product 105. Higher reaction temperatures promote trans-to-cis equilibration. The mechanism suggested by Bubnov, which encompasses the intermediates 108 through 112, is supported by labeling studies and the observation that complex 108, in the absence of alcohol, does not participate in any addition chemistry. A transient role for the ether 109 is not demanded by any experimental evidence, and so this aspect of the Bubnov mechanism remains speculative. Bubnov has shown that this transformation tolerates some additional functionality on both the allyl fragment and the pyridine ring, but for our purposes, the stripped down... [Pg.154]

As a part of general stereochemistry, the stereochemistry of macromolecules obeys some well-established principles of general validity.
