Material adaptive

In addition to their role in composites, high performance fibers are also found in coated and laminated textile products, three-dimensional fabric stmctures, multifunctional property improvement, and intelligent or self-adaptive materials. 

The versatility of the plastic materials permits them to be varied to perform special functions. By applying ingenuity to these amazingly adaptable materials, we can produce products that add to the worldwide survival capability of life under severe environments and improve the quality of life under normal environments. The designer s role in fitting the possibilities to the needs is one that is increasingly important. 

This cage-adapted material has shortcomings in terms of behaviour in larger flocks. This manifests itself in an excessive tendency for feather pecking and cannibalism, and, independent of flock size, many mislaid eggs.

Among the adaptive materials currently on the forefront are liquid crystals, electro- and magneto-rheological (ER/MR) fluids, thermo- and physioreponsive gels, and shape memory alloys. In all but the last case, these systems involve... 

The ideal solution is a material that can change its shape or properties as needed. A single, adaptable material or structure requires no compromises. 

Man-made materials which can, to different degrees, self assemble, self diagnose, self repair, and recognize and discriminate physical and/or chemical stimuli, and, at the extreme, which have the capability of learning and self-replicating. The term is often considered to be synonymous with adaptive materials .

One may define molecular and supramolecular dynamic materials as materials whose components are linked through reversible covalent or non-covalent connections and undergo spontaneous and continuous change in constitution by assembly/disassembly processes in a given set of conditions. Such materials may in principle respond to multiple physical or chemical stimuli by constitutional variation and thus act as adaptive materials. 

Via recognition-directed association and self-organization processes, supramolecular chemistry has opened new perspectives in materials science towards the design and engineering of supramolecular materials. These, again, are dynamic by nature, whereas molecular materials must be rendered dynamic by introduction of reversible covalent connections between building blocks. Because of their intrinsic ability to exchange their components, they may in principle select them in response to external stimuli or environmental factors and therefore behave as adaptive materials of either molecular or supramolecular nature [7-9]. 

CDC introduces into the chemistry of materials a basic shift with respect to constitutionally static materials and opens new perspectives in materials science. A rich variety of novel architectures, processes, and properties may be expected to result from the blending of supramolecular and molecular dynamic chemistry with materials chemistry, giving access to adaptive materials and adaptive technologies. 

The cytochrome is normally in its reduced state in intact dark-adapted material but is very sensitive to changes in its environment, changing from its high-potential form ( n, 380 mV) to its low-potential form ( ,n=80 mV). The redox state of the cytochrome seems to have no direct relationship to the function of the 02-evolving enzyme (e.g. Ref. 190). The oxidized Cyt 6-559 gives rise to characteristic low-spin haem EPR signals [191]. 

The OEC is generally not synchronized to the same S-state even in dark-adapted material, the S-state distribution is usually about 25% Sp and 75% S,. It is clear that the B band often appears as a mixture of B1+B2, with the proportion of the two depending on the initial S-state distribution. Thus, the reaction giving rise to the composite B band may be written as [S2/S3 QB ] [S1/S2 QB] +... 

The validation has the objective to identify, during the method development process, all sources of error and eliminate them or to quantify their contribution to the total uncertainty of the determination. For trace organic determinations particular attention must be given to the quantitative extraction and clean-up of all PCBs. Several types of adapted materials must be prepared to test all steps of the process (from simple calibrant solutions or mixtures, spiked extracts, to spiked soil material). CRMs should be used for validating trueness. Laboratory RMs must be prepared for the establishment of control charts when the method is under statistical control.

Therefore, surface engineering is expected to grow rapidly in the field of modifying and adapting materials for specific biological environments. The number of relevant patents and papers is increasing strongly and some of this work has already led to new, commercial, weU adapted biomaterials.
