Solid oxide fuel cells planar design

McDermott Technology, Inc., of Alliance, OH, developed a conceptual design of a high efficiency power plant system that joins planar solid oxide fuel cell technology with microturbine technology in a combined cycle. The system was operated at atmospheric conditions.

Commence design work on heavy-duty tmck cab application using planar electrode supported solid oxide fuel cell and diesel fuel. Finalize specifications (e.g. capacity, duty cycle, volume and weight, vehicle integration issues).

In Section 21.3, the fundamental problems arising in the development of planar solid oxide fuel cells have been listed sealing, corrosion of the bipolar plates, and the development of mechanical stresses in the numerous ceramic components found in such fuel cells. Solutions depend not only on the selection of suitable materials for the individual component parts of the fuel cells, but also on respecting certain principles of design and operation.

Two main concepts for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are currently under development the tubular and the planar designs. In terms of long-term stability, the tubular concept has demonstrated the best results, while the planar design promises higher power densities.
