Sodium animal foodstuff

On the other hand, defluorinated phosphate rock is utilized as an animal feed ingredient. Defluorinated phosphoric acid is mainly used in the production of animal foodstuffs and hquid fertilizers. By comparison, salted herring contain huge amounts of sodium, perhaps 100 g Na or 250 g NaCl kg DM. 

The commercial production of orthophosphates and polyphosphates, particularly the sodium, ammonium and calcium salts, together with phosphoric acid, greatly exceeds that of aU other compounds of phosphorus. The lion s share of these is used by the fertiliser industry, but detergents, animal foodstuffs, metal treatments and human food products are also major consumers. 

Sodium is not required by plants but can replace part of the K requirement of some plant species. The attraction of some animals to NaCl and the long history of NaCl as an important article of commerce suggest that soils in humid regions may provide inadequate Na+ and Cl- for animal diets. Humans ingest more NaCl than they require, because of taste preferences and because NaCl is used in food preservation, but a suggestion of insufficiency in animal diets remains. Of the essential elements, Na+, Cl-, I-, and F- are unique in that much of their supply to humans comes from additions to our diet rather than from natural foodstuffs. 

Sodium intoxication of animals is rare, and in most cases occurs only after excessive NaCl supplementation of foodstuffs in domestic animals. In general, 30 g NaCl kg in the rations of turkeys, hens. 

In Food Products. Algin has been eaten for hundreds of years as a constituent of kelp in specialty foods (37, 269) while algin itself has been used in various foodstuffs for a quarter of a century. Extensive animal feeding tests on sodium alginate and propylene glycol alginate have shown that they are nontoxic and not allergens (172,173,180).
