Humans are a far bigger threat to lizards than they are to us. Lizards are generally slow moving and nocturnal, with few enemies other than humans. The venom is a complex mixture that contains serotonin, a neurotransmitter, but lacks many of the other protein-degrading enzymes. Clinical effects are minor unless you are small and receive a large dose. [Pg.162]

Neurotransmitter chemicals are stored in small containers called vesicles, located inside the presynaptic terminal. Upon receiving stimulation from the action potential, the vesicles migrate toward the cell membrane, fuse with it, create a pore, and discharge their contents into the synapse. Fig. 1 shows the block diagram of the vibrometer, in which the most sensible to small phase variations interferometric scheme is employed. It consists of the microwave and the display units. The display unit consists of the power supply 1, controller 2 of the phase modulator 3, microprocessor unit 9 and low-frequency amplifier 10. The microwave unit contains the electromechanical phase modulator 3, a solid-state microwave oscillator 4, an attenuator 5, a bidirectional coupler 6, a horn antenna 7 and a microwave detector 11. The horn antenna is used for transmitting the microwave and receiving the reflected signal, which is mixed with the reference signal in the bidirectional coupler. In the reference channel the electromechanical phase modulator is used to provide automatic calibration of the instrument. Method 1. Arrange the flask containing the reaction mixture for steam distillation as in Fig. II, 40, 1. Proceed with the steam distillation until crystals of p-dibromobenzene appear in the condenser. Change the receiver and continue with the distillation until all the p-dibromobenzeiie has passed over from time to time run out the water from the condenser so that the crystals melt and run down into the receiver. Reject the residue in the flask. Transfer the first distillate to a separatory funnel, wash it with a httle water, and dry the lower layer with a little anhydrous magnesium sulphate or anhydrous calcium chloride filter. Distil slowly from a small distilling flask use a wire gauze or an air bath (Fig. II, 5, 3). Collect the fraction which passes over at 150-170° pour the residue (R), while it is still hot, into a small beaker or porcelain basin for the isolation of p-dibromobenzene. Redistil the fraction of b.p. 150-170° and collect the bromobenzene at 154-157° (3). The yield is 60 g. [Pg.536]

Self-baked carbon electrodes are those whose shapes are formed in situ (33). The carbonaceous mixture is placed into a hoUow tube-shaped metal casing. The upper end receives the unbaked mixture as a soHd block, small particles, or warm plastic paste. The casing contains inwardly-projecting longitudinal perforated fins that become surrounded by baked carbon as the casing is incrementally moved downward and through the contact plates. Casing and carbon are consumed in this furnace. [Pg.518]

Leached waters are carried with the water as it percolates through the underlying soil strata. Most of the organic constituents contained in the leachate receive additional treatment as they pass through the soil cohimn. Leached wastes can also be lost in surface rtinoff. [Pg.2259]
