Additives and Treatments

Regulations specify a considerable Hst of additives and treatments which may be permitted under controlled limits and conditions. It is important to note that no wine receives mote than a few of these treatments, and many have none. For example, most grape musts ferment readily without additions, but some extra nitrogen source for the yeasts is occasionally beneficial. If some is requited, ammonium phosphate is the most commonly used. 

This section covers all the additives and treatments that are added or applied to flour. Some of these qualify as permitted flour treatments in law. The term flour improver is also used as a synonym. In this work the term improver is restricted to the compound improvers that are added to bread doughs. These mixtures tend to contain not only flour treatments but other required ingredients as well such as emulsifiers. The statutory additions that are made to flour for nutritional reasons are excluded. Also excluded are some of the substances that have historically been used but have now been universally banned. Some substances such as potassium bromate that are banned in the UK but are still legal elsewhere are covered. 

Typical values of electrical properties of the homopolymer without additives and treatments are in the Table 3.8. The values can be substantially changed by the type of cooling and post-treatments, which determine the morphological state of the polymer. According to a recent paper 250 cf. 251),. V,0-diacetylsolasodine (227) was oxidized by sodium dichromate in aqueous acetic acid to the diketone 228, which could be transformed by Grignard addition and treatment with HCl into the 16-alkyl-substituted furostadiene derivative 229. 

It is not possible to completely protect a water sample from changes in composition. However, various additives and treatment techniques can be employed to minimize sample deterioration. These methods are summarized in Table 26.1. 

Due to the cost, as well as time, in testing anti-foulants in plant applications, some laboratory test methods have evolved to determine the fouling potential of process streams and to evaluate the effects of alternative additives and treatment levels. These laboratory tests are always of relatively short duration - from several minutes to several days - and require intensification of the causative factors to increase fouling rates, and thus provide measurable changes in the system parameters during the test times, which are short relative to the weeks or months of acmal field fouling problems.
