Small angle X-ray-scattering studies and light-scattering studies of lens extracts show that the transparency of the lens is the result of the short-range spatial order of lens proteins (Delaye and Tardieu, 1983). The molecular structure of the individual crystallins is well ordered even though the overall pattern in the lens may appear chaotic. [Pg.130]

In our small-angle x-ray scattering studies of coals, x-rays (wavelength 1.54A) from a copper-target diffraction tube were formed into a well-defined beam and struck the coal sample, which was in powdered form and which had a thickness of about 1 mm. Figure 1 shows a schematic diagram of the scattering apparatus. [Pg.11]

The PSOC coals were especially convenient samples for our x-ray studies, because in the data bank, there is a considerable amount of information about these coals obtained by techniques other than x-ray scattering. Without these other results we would not have been able to make such a detailed interpretation of the scattering data. Moreover, since we had studied PSOC coals, we could compare our porosity studies with the work of others, such as that of Gan, Nandi, and Walker—. On the other Jujiui, as the other small-angle x-ray scattering studies of coals— — which we are aware of did not investigate PSOC coals, we could not make a quantitative comparison of our scattering results with those previously published. [Pg.27]

The degree to which a given metal can stabilize the closed configuration seen for the diferric proteins (67, 68) has been addressed by small angle X-ray scattering studies (105). These show that Cu2OTf is... [Pg.429]

A Some ambiguity must be attached to this statement in view of the conclusions reached by Luzzati el al. (1961) on the basis of small angle X-ray scattering studies from dilute solutions of polybenzyl-L-glutamate in dimethylformamide, pyridine, and TO-cresol. These authors conclude that the conformation of the polypeptide in these solutions is that of the 3io-helix (Donohue, 1953) and not that of the a-helix. The value of 6o = —630° in Eq. (13) was obtained from optical rotatory dispersion measurements with similar solutions, and therefore if the conclusions of Luzzati et al. are correct, this value characterizes the 3io-helix. It would then be necessary to determine whether the 6o value for the a-helix is significantly different. [Pg.30]
