Scattering studies

Scattering studies are essentially adapted to the investigation of heterogeneous systems where there is a distribution of fine particles (the scatterers) in a transparent matrix. Two types of experiment are possible scattering from (1) distributed centers and (2) individual centers, both of which provide useful information on imperfections in transparent crystals. [Pg.444]

The early Hartley model [2, 3] of a spherical micellar stmcture resulted, in later years, in some considerable debate. The self-consistency (inconsistency) of spherical symmetry witli molecular packing constraints was subsequently noted [4, 5 and 6]. There is now no serious question of tlie tenet tliat unswollen micelles may readily deviate from spherical geometry, and ellipsoidal geometries are now commonly reported. Many micelles are essentially spherical, however, as deduced from many light and neutron scattering studies. Even ellipsoidal objects will appear... [Pg.2586]

Optical absorption measurements give band-gap data for cubic sihcon carbide as 2.2 eV and for the a-form as 2.86 eV at 300 K (55). In the region of low absorption coefficients, optical transitions are indirect whereas direct transitions predominate for quantum energies above 6 eV. The electron affinity is about 4 eV. The electronic bonding in sihcon carbide is considered to be predominantiy covalent in nature, but with some ionic character (55). In a Raman scattering study of vahey-orbit transitions in 6H-sihcon carbide, three electron transitions were observed, one for each of the inequivalent nitrogen donor sites in the sihcon carbide lattice (56). The donor ionization energy for the three sites had values of 0.105, 0.140, and 0.143 eV (57). [Pg.465]

Abstract—Experimental and theoretical studies of the vibrational modes of carbon nanotubes are reviewed. The closing of a 2D graphene sheet into a tubule is found to lead to several new infrared (IR)- and Raman-active modes. The number of these modes is found to depend on the tubule symmetry and not on the diameter. Their diameter-dependent frequencies are calculated using a zone-folding model. Results of Raman scattering studies on arc-derived carbons containing nested or single-wall nanotubes are discussed. They are compared to theory and to that observed for other sp carbons also present in the sample. [Pg.129]

X-ray scattering studies at a renewed pc-Ag/electrolyte interface366,823 provide evidence for assuming that fast relaxation and diffu-sional processes are probable at a renewed Sn + Pb alloy surface. Investigations by secondary-ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) of the Pb concentration profile in a thin Sn + Pb alloy surface layer show that the concentration penetration depth in the solid phase is on the order of 0.2 pm, which leads to an estimate of a surface diffusion coefficient for Pb atoms in the Sn + Pb alloy surface layer on the order of 10"13 to lCT12 cm2 s i 820 ( p,emicai analysis by electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA) and Auger ofjust-renewed Sn + Pb alloy surfaces in a vacuum confirms that enrichment with Pb of the surface layer is probable.810... [Pg.144]
