Slot model

It enables first to explain the phenomena that happen in the thin-skin regime concerning the electromagnetic skin depth and the interaetion between induced eddy eurrent and the slots. Modelling can explain impedance signals from probes in order to verify experimental measurements. Parametric studies can be performed on probes and the defect in order to optimise NDT system or qualify it for several configurations. [Pg.147]

Retention characteristics and elution order of carotenoid cis-trans isomers with C30-bonded phases are strikingly similar to those obtained with normal-phase systems using calcium hydroxide columns (190). Different carotenoids exhibit varying retention behavior in response to temperature changes for C30 and C34 polymeric stationary phases as compared with a Cl8 polymeric phase (179). These behaviors are believed to be related to conformational changes in the longer stationary phases with temperature. The slot model proposed for the retention of planar... [Pg.367]

Another design method uses capture efficiency. There are fewer models for capture efficiency available and none that have been validated over a wide range of conditions. Conroy and Ellenbecker - developed a semi-empirical capture efficiency for flanged slot hoods and point and area sources of contaminant. The point source model uses potential flow theory to describe the flow field in front of a flanged elliptical opening and an empirical factor to describe the turbulent diffusion of contaminant around streamlines. [Pg.850]

A schematic diagram of the version of the Aaberg slot exhaust (ASE) system is shown in Fig. 10.81. It consists of a horizontal bench to which a vertical flange is attached, housing a rectangular exhaust slot and jet nozzle. Figure 10.82 shows the two-dimensional geometry and the coordinate system of the ASE model. [Pg.960]

Potential Flow Model for a Bench Slot Exhaust... [Pg.962]

The exhaust opening is modeled as a finite-sized slot with a uniform velocity distribution. The workbench and the vertical wall below the exhaust slot form a streamline of fluid flow through which the fluid does not cross and, therefore, along this line we have T = 0. Between the slot and the jet, the vertical wall is also a streamline and from the dimensionalization given... [Pg.963]

A similar mathematical model to that just described for bench slot exhausts can again be used, but in this case the Laplace equation should be employed in a cylindrical coordinate system (see Fig. 10.83), namely,... [Pg.964]

Living cells contain thousands of different kinds of catalysts, each of which is necessary to life. Many of these catalysts are proteins called enzymes, large molecules with a slotlike active site, where reaction takes place (Fig. 13.39). The substrate, the molecule on which the enzyme acts, fits into the slot as a key fits into a lock (Fig. 13.40). However, unlike an ordinary lock, a protein molecule distorts slightly as the substrate molecule approaches, and its ability to undergo the correct distortion also determines whether the key will fit. This refinement of the original lock-and-key model is known as the induced-fit mechanism of enzyme action. [Pg.689]

The quasi-one-dimensional model of two-phase flow in a heated capillary slot, driven by liquid vaporization from the interface, is described in Chap. 8. It takes... [Pg.3]

Peles el al. (2000) elaborated on a quasi-one-dimensional model of two-phase laminar flow in a heated capillary slot due to liquid evaporation from the meniscus. Subsequently this model was used for analysis of steady and unsteady flow in heated micro-channels (Peles et al. 2001 Yarin et al. 2002), as well as the study of the onset of flow instability in heated capillary flow (Hetsroni et al. 2004). [Pg.350]

The general features of two-dimensional flow with evaporating liquid-vapor meniscus in a capillary slot were studied by Khrustalev and Faghri (1996). Following this work we present the main results mentioned in their research. The model of flow in a narrow slot is presented in Fig. 10.16. Within a capillary slot two characteristic regions can be selected, where two-dimensional or quasi-one-dimensional flow occurs. Two-dimensional flow is realized in the major part of the liquid domain, whereas the quasi-one-dimensional flow is observed in the micro-film region, located near the wall. [Pg.429]

The previous general continuous-time formulations are mostly oriented towards arbitrary network processes. On the other hand, different continuous-time formulations focused their attention on particular features of a wide variety of sequential processes. One of the first contributions following this direction is based on the concept of time slots, which stand for a set of predefined time intervals with unknown durations. The main idea is to postulate an appropriate number of time slots for each processing unit in order to allocate them to the batches to be processed. The definition of the number of time slots required is not a trivial decision and represents an important trade-offbetween optimality and computational performance. Other alternative approaches for sequential processes were developed based on the concept of batch precedence. Model variables defining the processing sequence of batch tasks are explicitly embedded into these formulations and, consequently,... [Pg.171]

There are few systematic, publicly available data, especially for the large machines, by means of which these extractors may be evaluated. The most complete were obtained by Barson and Beyer (Bl) with a laboratory model having an 18-in.-diameter rotor, and containing 17 concentric rings each fitted at 180° intervals with a small slot, 0.040 by... [Pg.325]

Apparatus. A Perkin-Elmer model 303 atomic absorption spectrometer equipped with a DCR-1 readout accessory and a strip chart recorder was used for all determinations. A Boling burner was used for all determinations made in the air-acetylene flame except for copper where a single-slot, high-solids burner was used. The nitrous oxide burner was used for refractory elements. Burner and instrument settings used were those recommended by the manufacturer s handbook. [Pg.67]
