Slimming aids

The commodification of traditional knowledge poses problems that also transcend intellectual property considerations since, in indigenous communities, medicinal plants can have cultural, symbolic and ritual values that go beyond a simple medicinal or economic use. Thus, the cultivation of a plant outside its natural habitat and the capture of its medicinal properties into a commercial product can generate mistrust, inequality and betrayal because the loss of the cultural value is not addressed by any monetary compensation. These problems have been exemplified by the development of Hoodia gordo-nii,46 a sacred life force of the South African San, which was turned into a commercial slimming aid .47... 

The slimming aid LipoKinetix contains norephedrine hydrochloride, sodium usinate, 3,5-diiodothyronine, yohimbine hydrochloride, and caffeine. Seven patients all had the signs and symptoms of acute toxic hepatitis after taking this dietary supplement (176). Three patients had taken no other concomitant medications. All recovered spontaneously after LipoKinetix was withdrawn. 

Among the reported effects of sparteine are reduced cardiac conductivity, stimulation of uterine motility, circulatory collapse, and respiratory arrest. Sparteine was contained in a slimming aid ( Herbal Slimming Aid, UK). It was formerly used to induce labor at the very least it should be considered contraindicated during pregnancy. 

Production of L-carnitine by microbial hydroxylation of y-butyro-betaine (continuous process, yield > 130 g 1— 1 d 1, or repeated batch process) with amutant strain of Agrobac-terium/Rhizobium lacking L-carnitine dehydrogenase.This process (Fig. 17), developed by Lonza, operates on a 140 tons per year scale. L-Carnitine is used in pharmaceuticals as a thyroid inhibitor, as a slimming aid, and in sports foods and drinks [174,176,177]. 

It is also commonly used in some western countries as dietary supplement and as slimming aid. 

After World War II, they became prescription drugs and were widely prescribed as pick-me-ups. They were once used as a slimming aid, as they reduced appetite. Although their unlicensed possession became illegal both in the United Kingdom (1964) and the United States (1970), people continued to take them. 

A preparation of cellulose, made from the pure cellulose of cotton or wood, which absorbs up to 50 times its weight of water to form a stable mass. Because of this unique characteristic, it is used as a whipping agent in confectioneries, jellies and ice cream, and as an inert food filler in slimming aids. Ethyl methyl cellulose and hydroxyethyl-cellulose are examples of other cellulose derivatives with similar properties. 

Walker (2005) discusses the need to reflect upon the Code of Conduct for the International Red Cross and Red Crescent. He outlines that the Code was principally devised for natural disasters and is not as applicable in complex emergencies. In 2004, however, Hugo Slim, the resident scholar and ethicist at the International Federation of Red Cross Red Crescent, proposed five moral hazards aid-relief workers should be aware of. These are as follows (IFRC, 2004) ...

The synthesis of thyroid hormone is regulated, and in the absence of thyroid disease provision of additional iodine does not increase hormone secretion except in people who were iodine deficient. Nevertheless, there are people who market various iodine-rich preparations to aid weight loss. Foremost among these are the so-called slimming patches, which contain seaweed extract as a source of iodine which is supposed to be absorbed from a small patch applied to the skin. There is no evidence that such patches have any beneficial effect at all.
