M in concentration. This is in the range required for single-molecule detection. These sensitivity levels have been obtained on colloidal clusters at near-infrared excitation. Figure 10.3 is a schematic representation of a single-molecule experiment performed in a gold or silver colloidal solution. The analyte is provided as a solution at concentrations smaller than 10-11 M, Table 10.1 lists the anti-Stokes/Stokes intensity ratios for crystal violet (CY) at 1174 cm-1 using 830-nm near-infrared radiation well away from the resonance absorption of CY with a power of 106 W/cm2 [34]. CV is attached to various colloidal clusters as indicated in the table. Raman cross sections of 10-16 cm2/molecule or an enhancement factor of 1014 can be inferred from the data. 

The size-selective precipitation (SPP) was predominantly developed by Pileni [50c]. In this paper we demonstrate capabilities of double-pulse laser ablation (DPLA) in liquid environment for fabrication of metallic nanoparticles with a narrow size-distribution. We examined optical properties of the silver colloidal solutions prepared by DPLA in order to reveal the role of the second laser pulse in a size change of the particles produced in the ablation plume.

Stain the microspreads with the Ag-40 silver method (Section VI,C) or with the silver colloidal solution (Section V,C,2). Digest the microspreads with RNase solution for 1 hr at 37°C. It is also possible to produce antibacterial woven cotton and polyester fabrics using colloidal silver nanoparticles. Figure 1.14 clearly shows that silver nanoparticles are well-dispersed on the fibre surfaces in each fabric. In this procedure, woven cotton and polyester fabrics were padded through a certain concentration of silver colloids and squeezed to 83 % wet pick-up with a laboratory pad at a constant pressure. Textile fabrics in which the antibacterial activity shows good laundering durability can be easily obtained via the padding process using nanosized silver colloidal solutions. 

Argyria is a rare disorder associated with the exposure or ingestion of silver colloidal solution, a colloid consisting of silver particles suspended in liquid, resulting in a permanent dermal deposition of inert silver salts [42 ]. 

A 58-year-old man with a medical history of schizoaffective disorder, delusional parasitosis and Clostridium difficile colitis (CDC) was hospitalised for worsening diarrhoea as a result of CDC exacerbation. He had been using oral silver colloidal solution purchased from internet for several months to purify his blood and kill the (delusional) parasites. Skin biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of argyria.

The silver colloids were prepared by the use of Creighton s procedure by the reduction of AgNOa with NaBH4. In a typical experiment, one volume part of lO M AgNOs is added dropwise to three volume parts of 2 X 10- M NaBH4, cooled in an ice bath, and mixed vigorously. The yellow-brownish silver colloidal solution was stored at 5°C for weeks without any change in color. 

Applications of volumes of solution down to 100 nl has been undertaken with a 1 pi Hamilton syringe in conjunction with a micrometer. After drying, HPTLC plates are sprayed to wetness with silver colloidal solution by a spray atomizer. Colored spots arising on the HPTLC plate are used to locate the separated molecules. The spot color varies from pale yellow through orange to violet depending on the nature and concentration of the compounds.
