In addition to the polymer substrate, a series of binding resins made from polyamide and polyimide, polyphenylsulfide (PPS), polyether sulfone (PES) and/or silicone resin are necessary for applying the coating. Such substances like laminating agents (lithium polysilicate, aluminum phosphate and phosphoric acid) and various additives are also used. There is a separate Council of Europe Resolution, APRes (2004), on silicone materials for food contact. The resolution defines the silicone product group being comprised of silicone rubbers, silicone liquids, silicone pastes and silicone resins. Blends of silicone rubber with organic polymers are covered by the resolution where the silicone monomer units are the predominant species by weight. Silicones that are used as food additives or processing aids (e.g. as defoamers in the manufacture of substances such as wine) are not covered by this resolution, but polysiloxanes used as emulsifiers are. The resolution gives an overall migration limit of 10 mg/dm of the surface area of the product or material, or 60 mg/kg of food. Lubricants may be added either as an additive or at the fabrication stage as a processing aid. In general lubricants prevent adhesion with metal parts. Silicones are produced in the form of resins, oils, greases, and also as rubberlike elastic products. These materials also appear as processing aids in the manufacturing of plastics, as impregnation compounds, coatings, separating materials, mold releases, etc. They can be identified because they contain the element silicon. To test for silicon, mix approximately 30 mg of the sample with 100 mg sodium carbonate and 10 mg sodium peroxide. Heat this in a platinum or nickel crucible over a flame. Dissolve the melt in a few drops of water, boil it, and then add dilute nitric acid until the solution is neutral or slightly acidic. Alternative processing-aid chemistries have the toughest arguments to make for their use since they have less history of use than standard lubricants. For example silicone-based processing aids, such as the Genioplast materials from Wacker Chernies are said to reduce to screw torque substantially and increase the melt-flow rate of both unfilled and filled PO compounds.
