Silicon production

The location of a silicon metal plant is determined by balancing market costs against processing ones. Principal elements in the cost of silicon production, which ate site-dependent, are the deUvered cost of the raw materials, energy cost, and labor. Typical costs for production of silicon are given in Table 1. [Pg.535]

There is no limit to the possible configurations of electric furnaces. They exist as single-phase or polyphase, a-c or d-c, and one to six or more electrodes. The furnace cross sections can be round, heart-shaped, oval, rectangular, or variations of each. Some furnaces, especially those for silicon production, have a rotating hearth and shell. [Pg.520]

Cure systems based on hydrosilylation can be formulated as one and two-part silicone products, that can be either flowing or non-flowing. These formulations provide fast thermal cure rates, they are resistant to humid and other harsh environments, and they have good dielectric properties. These formulations can be self-priming or alternatively the substrate may require priming before application of the silicone. [Pg.687]

The product is analyzed by vapor phase chromatography using a 6-ft., f-in. O.D. copper tube, packed with 5% Bentone-34 (Wilkins Instrument Co.) and 0.5% XF-1150 (General Electric Silicone Products) on Diatoport-S (80-100 mesh) (F and M Co.) flow rate of helium 60 ml./min., oven temperature 85°. This column separates m-cymene (retention time 12 minutes) from />-cymene (retention time 10 minutes) but does not resolve the ortho isomer. The purity of the distilled w-cymene is above 98%. [Pg.43]

CVD is used in silicon production in two major areas 1) in the production of ultra-pure silicon from which single-crystal ingots are made, and 2) in the preparation of epitaxial and poly cry stalline films. [Pg.353]

The first documented use of sUicone as biomaterial was silicone mbber tubing as shunts for treatment of hydrocephalus in about 1955. From 1960 to 1990, the biomedical application of sUicone mbber was steadUy grown. One of the most well-known silicone product is the Norplant contraceptive implant. The first clinical experiment with this device was reported in 1966. FDA approved its use in 1990. [Pg.246]

Even though silicon is extremely abundant, only one silicon-containing compound appears in the list of top 50 industrial chemicals. That is sodium silicate, Na2 Si03, used for the manufacture of silica gel and glass. Nevertheless, with the advent of the electronic age silicon has become an extremely important substance that is the primary ingredient of most semiconductors. Because these are microscale devices, the quantity of production of silicon remains small compared with that of fertilizers and construction materials. Although relatively small in quantity, the value of silicon products is quite high. [Pg.1523]

V. B. Kvashenkin. Plugging solution for cementing low pressure oil and gas wells—contains plugging Portland cement, waste of silicon production as the lightening additive and calcium chloride as mineral salt, and water. Patent SU 1832149-A, 1993. [Pg.419]

An important reaction of silicon compounds containing electronegative substituents, such as the halogens or a Group 15 or 16 element, is hydrolysis, which often occurs very readily even with atmospheric moisture. The primary reaction in silicone production is the hydrolysis of halosilanes, usually the readily available chlorosilanes, to give silanols, which then undergo acid-catalyzed condensation with loss of water, as shown in Scheme 1. [Pg.152]

Octamethyltetrasiloxane (D ) and octaphenyltetrasiloxane (D ") were generously supplied by General Electric Co., Silicone Products Division. l,3-Bis(4-hydroxybutyl)tetramethyldisiloxane and l,3-Bis(y-aminopropyl)tetramethyldisiloxane were purchased from Sllar Laboratories and Petrarch respectively. Trifluoroacetic acid was a product of Aldrich. All other chemicals were reagent grade and used without further purification. [Pg.165]

Silicone products dominate the pressure-sensitive adhesive release paper market, but other materials such as Quilon (E.I. du Pont de Nemours Co., Inc.), a Wemer-type chromium complex, stearato chromic chloride [12768-56-8], are also used. Various base papers are used, including polyethylene-coated kraft as well as polymer substrates such as polyethylene or polyester film. Silicone coatings that cross-link to form a film and also bond to the cellulose are used in various forms, such as solvent and solventless dispersions and emulsions. Technical requirements for the coated papers include good release, no contamination of the adhesive being protected, no blocking in rolls, good solvent holdout with respect to adhesives applied from solvent, and good thermal and dimensional stability (see Silicon compounds, silicones). [Pg.102]
