Who made up the Temperance Movement It was run by Jane Addams, who studied the Fabian Society s London settlement house Toynbee Hall experiment and came to the United States to launch a parallel project which later produced the University of Chicago. (4) The "cadre" were drawn almost exclusively from three pools 1) the settlement house and suffragette networks run by Addams and the Russell Sage Foundation 2) the proterrorist synthetic religious cults operated out of Oberlin College in Ohio and 3) the Ku Klux Klan in the South.

In the later decades of the nineteenth century, millions of people emigrated from Europe to the United States and settled in its large cities. Steel mills, machine tool industries, railroads, canals, farms, and municipal governments provided employment for the new unskilled laborers with low wages. Almost all lived in poverty, had limited access to clean water, sewer systems, schools, or medical treatment. Settlement houses were an attempt to reverse these unanswered needs. The settlement houses developed and became models that inspired some companies to initiate some occupational health and safety activities. In 1907, a group of cotton mills in the South employed trained nurses to attend persons who were sick in the mill community (to get them well as quickly as possible). At the New York Telephone Company, there was a retiring-room for operators who felt indisposed. The National Cash Register Company began giving physical examinations to applicants for work as early as 1901. Examinations were introduced at Sears, Roebuck, and Company in Chicago in 1909. By 1914, physical examinations of employees were a fixture in many large companies. 

Developments in social work came out of the feminist- and reform-driven professionalism of settlement house workers in cities like Chicago and New York. While these agencies were run by women of privilege, they were community based and had much closer ties to families than did schools and their teachers. Visiting teachers were the forerunners of today s social workers. Concerned with the disconnect that existed between poor and immigrant families and schools, settlement house workers in New York worked with the Public Education Society to create a link between families and schools that the city s Board of Education would ultimately adopt.

This study was conducted in two remnant rainforest patches on private land on the Atherton Tableland, North Queensland, Australia. Location 1 was the property of S. and M. Part of the reason for the lack of natural product-based antifouhng alternatives is the necessity for expertise that historically is only found in an academic-industry research collaboration. The cross purposes of academia and business make it difficult to collaborate. Both academia and industry usually frown upon such research collaborations. The coatings industry usually does its research in-house and shies away from joint research and development programs. At the 10th International Congress, there was one report on isolation of natural products for prevention of larval settlement from an industrial source.140 This report was from scientists trained in academia and hired by a coatings company to do in-house studies of natural products. 

Residential applications can be further divided into two subgroups i) rural villages and settlements and ii) rural residential housing. 

Due to the small size of agro-tourism settlements the size of the installed power system is similar to that of the rural housing market segment, which has been analysed in previous sections. Nevertheless, there are other tourism applications such as mral tourism refuges and rural hostel services, usually located in mountains, which require higher amounts of energy. 

The sites in the New World from which these sherds have been excavated are among the earliest to be inhabited by the Spanish. In the Dominican Republic there are four Isabela, which was the first substantial settlement in the New World La Vega Vieja, which appears to have been founded as early as 1495 the Convento de San Francisco, the first of several religious houses to be constructed in the city of Santa Domingo (for which the church was completed in 1555 and the monastery in 1556) and Juandolio, which was an early 16th century site. In Venezuela the site of Nueva Cadiz was the earliest Spanish settlement. It was founded about 1515 and was abruptly destroyed by an earthquake in 1545 and subsequently deserted. The sherds from Mexico come from excavations within Mexico City. These include archaeological excavations at the Metropolitan Cathedral and commercial excavation for the Metro... 

I recall seeing such settlements in the Philippine provinces of Tarlac and Pangasinan, where each house displayed, in large letters on the front near the steps, the names and ages of all the family members who slept there, allowing security forces on their nightly patrols to more easily identify any unauthorized visitors.

Archaeological evidence collaborates this scenario. Excavations at Norse houses from the later period of the settlement have revealed the skeletons of cattle that died in their stalls during the winter. Other bioarchaeological information suggests a clear decline in nutrition. There are indications of a decline in stature in the Greenland Vikings over time and a number of the later skeletons exhibit evidence of disease and malnutrition.
