The HOME inventory (Caldwell and Bradley, 1979) (preschool version) was administered at age 3 years by a nurse trained in its use by a psychologist. This instrument, developed by Bradley and Caldwell (1977), has revealed a substantial relationship between aspects of the home environment and children s intellectual and language development during early childhood. The decision to include this measure, rather than the Parent Attitude Research Inventory, was made after the study group participated in the First International Lead Workshop in Cincinnati in 1981 (Bomshein, 1962). At that time, its administration at 2 years of age was precluded, as some of the cohort had already passed their second birthday. Because the HOME inventory will be administered again at age five years, a measure of its stability over time will be possible. 

Notify a physician immediately. A suggested procedure for physicians or nurses is intravenous administration of 0.3 g (10 mL of a 3% solution) of sodium nitrite at the rate of 2.5 mL/min followed by 12.5 g (50 mL of a 25% solution) of sodium thiosulfate at the same rate. Watch the patient for 24 to 48 h, especially in cases of ingestion or skin absorption. If symptoms reappear, repeat the injections in half the original amounts. These solutions should be kept readily available. In some cases, first aid personnel have been trained to use the intravenous medication subject to government regulations. 

If a known adverse health effect can reasonably be anticipated under the circumstances of work - and could readily be observed - some form of heahh surveillance is appropriate. This may involve a doctor or trained nurse. It may include the checking of employees skin for dermatitis or asking questions relevant to any asthmatic condition where work is with recognized causative agents (e.g. epoxy resin curing agents).
