Self polymer-based

The advantages claimed for organotin polymer-based antifouling paints include constant toxicant deHvery vs time, erosion rate and toxicant deHvery are controUable, no depleted paint residue to remove and dispose, 100% utilization of toxicant, polishing at high erosion rates, surface is self-cleaning, and function is continuously reactivated. [Pg.71]

Shinkai (65) exploited the boronic acid-diol motif mentioned above to self-assemble a polymer based on pyridine-magnesium porphyrin interactions. In this case, the evidence for polymerization comes from lightscattering experiments in dilute solution which yielded an average molecular weight of 109 g mol-1 for this system. [Pg.255]

A wide variety of hyperbranched polymers have been described in the literature. Initially, these were mainly condensation polymers such as polyesters and polyethers since the required monomers were the most readily available. A number of hyperbranched polymers based on vinyl monomers have been described lately after the introduction of self-condensing vinyl polymerization. One structural variation which has been widely employed for hyperbranched... [Pg.30]

With the advent of high-performance concrete and the development of third-generation (mostly acrylic polymer-based) superplasticizers which provide significantly higher water reduction at flowable consistencies, this demarcation has blurred. Through the use of a mixture of admixtures it is now possible to obtain highly durable low water-cement ratio concretes that are nearly self-leveling and yet quite cohesive. [Pg.440]

It is reasonable to assume that the complementary units form the expected triply hydrogen bonded pairs, so that the entirely different behaviour of the pure compounds and of the 1 1 mixtures may be attributed to the spontaneous association of the complementary components into a polymolecular entity based on hydrogen bonding. The overall process may then be described as the self-assembly of a supramolecular liquid-crystalline polymer based on molecular recognition (Figure 40). The resulting species (TP2, TU2) is represented schematically by structure 174. [Pg.167]

In addition, taper-shaped and dendritic units were connected either covalently (at the apex or at the periphery) [133,135, 383,405] or by means of self assembly (e.g., hydrogen bonding [399]) to a polymer backbone. For example, polymers based on poly[4-(3-methacryloylpropyl]pyridine] form hydrogen bonded complexes with partially fluorinated mono-, di-, or trisubstituted benzoic acids (see complex 221 in Fig. 72). The type of mesophase formed by these complexes varies from smectic via columnar to cubic, most probably micellar cubic, with rising... [Pg.90]

However, with the expanding spectrum of complexity and functionality of new polymer-based hybrid materials, no general routes and recipes for processing polymer-assisted materials should be expected. The effort to establish new approaches for guiding self-assembly of complex functional materials is the key to further technological application. [Pg.68]

Novel microreactors with immobilized enzymes were fabricated using both silicon and polymer-based microfabrication techniques. The effectiveness of these reactors was examined along with their behavior over time. Urease enzyme was successfully incorporated into microchannels of a polymeric matrix of polydimethylsiloxane and through layer-bylayer self-assembly techniques onto silicon. The fabricated microchannels had cross-sectional dimensions ranging from tens to hundreds of micrometers in width and height. The experimental results for continuous-flow microreactors are reported for the conversion of urea to ammonia by urease enzyme. Urea conversions of >90% were observed. [Pg.261]

Next to metals, probably the synthetic polymer-based composites have been modeled most by hierarchical multiscale methods. Different multiscale formulations have been approached top-down internal state variable approaches, self-consistent (or homogenization) theories, and nanoscale quantum-molecular scale methods. [Pg.106]

As with all supramolecular structures, one of the most important issues is whether a direct relationship between the structure of a material and its function or properties can be established. In the following, some examples of polymer systems which show such a correlation will be discussed. The materials addressed will include block copolymers, polyalkylthiophenes and a multilayer system based on the self-assembly of polyelectrolytes. Detailed studies on the electrochemical properties of redox-active polymers, based on poly(vinyl pyridine) modified with pendent osmium polypyridyl moieties, have shown that electrochemical, neutron reflectivity and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance measurements can yield detailed information about the structural aspects of thin layers of these materials. [Pg.143]

A self-assembly DNA-conjugated polymer-based DNA detection method was previously mentioned. This study showed specific immobilization to a gold substrate with the self-assembly technique, not physical adsorption and great selectivity to fully matched DNA instead of nonspecific adsorption due to self-assembly DNA-conjugated polyallylamine and PAA coating [67,68]. However, a major problem was that we needed to prepare many kinds of DNA-conjugated polymer to analyze many kinds of target DNA due to direct modification of probe DNA to the polymer side chain. [Pg.104]

Several polymer/polyelectrolyte-nanocrystal hybrid devices have been fabricated seeking to exploit the electro and photoluminescent properties of such material [179-188]. Device fabrication in all these cases is by low-cost self-assembly based techniques. These devices utilize thin films of these hybrids obtained either by multilayer deposition or drop/spin casting methods. Thus, solar cells have been made from poly(2-hexylthiophene)-CdSe nanorod multilayers, lasers from drop cast films of CdSe-titania composites and an infrared emitter from multilayers... [Pg.80]
