Second-Year Activities

In a 2nd-year design-implement project at Queen s University in Belfast, classes are divided into groups of six to undertake the design, construction, and testing of [Pg.125]

The beam design laboratory is a new type of learning activity for students in the first three years and has been judged by students to be quite a success. The lab provides a good mix of teamwork, hands-on experience, and applied theory in an authentic setting. Not only has it fulfilled its initial goal of reinforcing the fundamentals of beam theory, but it has also increased student enthusiasm and improved their perceived relevance of the statics course overall. [Pg.127]

The Symposium was further highlighted by an initiative of IPPA to honour Prof Walter Pilnik for all his activities in the past in the interest of pectin research and of the association of pectin producing industries. This was done by awarding a talented, junior scientist in the field to present the so-called Walter Pilnik Lecture. This award, which will be given every second year, was given to Dr Maureen McCann. [Pg.997]

We can, of course, combine a number of observations to allow ourselves to actively test for a set of trends, such as the existence of a trend of increasing difference between two groups of animals over a period of time. This is demonstrated in Example 22.1. In a chronic feeding study in rats, we tested the hypothesis that, in the second year of the study, there was a dose responsive increase in tumor incidence associated with the test compound. We utilize a Cox-Stuart test for trend to address this question. All groups start the second year with an equal number of animals. [Pg.893]

Body weights of female rats were 6-9% lower than controls during the second year. Hematology examinations completed at a 15 month interim sacrifice showed no effects. The only treatment-related changes noted were in the respiratory tract. Minimal to mild chronic active inflammation was observed at all concentrations at the 7 month interim sacrifice, but only at the two higher concentrations at two years. The inflammation was described as multifocal, minimal to mild accumulations of macrophages, neutrophils and cell debris within alveolar spaces. Fibrosis was observed in 2/54, 6/53, 35/53 and 43/53 male rats, and 8/52, 7/53, 45/53, and 49/53 female rats at 0, 0.03, 0.06, and 0.11 mg/m, respectively. Hyperplasia of the bronchial lymph nodes and atrophy of the olfactory epithelium were observed at the high dose. [Pg.263]

Second year male example cycles This reported example was several interviewed athletes first cycle containing an injectable testosterone. Testosterone propionate was chosen due to a distinctly lower degree of water retention (due to active-life) and because it was only briefly active in the system. This allow myself and others to end administration of the testosterone quickly if unacceptable negative side effects resulted and circulatory levels reduced after 2-3 days. Kind of like avoiding a serious car wreck at the expense of a scratch. [Pg.166]

WDKA Space Science activities were based on selected topics in matter and energy, the two overarching themes in the first semester of general chemistry. Eight faculty members from the chemistry, geosciences, mathematics, and physics departments took part in this seminar. Since all students in this course take general chemistry in the first year and calculus-based physics in the second year, the activities incorporated vocabulary from these courses. Whenever possible, faculty leading the activities consciously used scientific terms from other... [Pg.181]

Trying to stay awake to study, a second-year medical student added three 12-oz cans of caffeinated soda a day (-40 g sugar/can) to her diet. She did not otherwise change her diet or physical activity. How much weight would she be expected to gain during the next 6 months ... [Pg.253]

The adults overwinter on the vegetative tops of caraway and then, they attack the whole plant in second year. They are spread passively by wind, actively by movement and probably by the seed. [Pg.15]

A two-year investigation was undertaken to determine the composition and concentration of hydrocarbons in sediment, water and commercially important marine organisms throughout Charlotte Harbor. The entire project was detailed in an unpublished report to the Florida Department of Natural Resources (1 0). The first-year project revealed limited petroleum conteunination associated with certain land-use activities (6 1 ). The second-year study, the primary subject of this presentation, investigated the problem areas in more detail to characterize the type of petroleum contamination and to identify probable sources. [Pg.230]

Fluorine (F) is the second most active chemical element after astatine. It was isolated in 1886 by Henri Moisson in Paris (BriH 1995), and five years later, F. Erhardt in Germany recommended that pregnant women and children should take fluorine pastilles at second dentition. Moreover, F. Erhardt was the first to observe that fluorine fortified dogs dental enamel (Anke 1991). However surprising it is, now as before, the plastic role of fluorine is beyond doubt. Nevertheless, in spite of the availability of a wide class of flu-orous compounds with a pronounced physiological activity, some of the aspects of its biological effects are still not clear. [Pg.1415]

The Federal share of the cost of radon program activities implemented with Federal assistance under this section in any fiscal year shall not exceed 75 percent of the costs incurred by the State in implementing such program in the first year of a grant to such State, 60 percent in the second year, and 50 percent in the third year. Federal assistance shall be made on the condition that the non-Federal share is provided from non-Federal funds. [Pg.941]
