3 Second and Third Ploors. The layout of the second and third floors is shown in Fig. 9.2.C, as mentioned in the discussion of the first floor the instrument and control rooms are on the second and third floor levels. These two rooms operate much.as a unit with the instrument room having the amplifiers and relays and the control room having the indicating and recording instruments for reactor operation. The control room is at the higher level so that conduits and raceways do nq.t come from an overhead position. / [Pg.368]

The third floor level is at the same.elevation as the reactor top. This gives a level 4-ft walkway between these two areas. This walkway provides the main access path to the mechanisms located on the reactor top. [Pg.368]

Standard metal partitioning is used for the wall construction around the instrument and control rooms, adding flexibility to the design. During the D2-2 ground motion, new diagonal cracks opened up in infill walls in addition to existing cracks. The liquid reagent, a polyethylene glycol-based mixture, is heated and applied to the surface (particularly floors) using a sprayer or brush. The reagent is then allowed to remain in place. (Second and third applications are common.) When it penetrates up to 2 inches, the liquid contacts the PCB and reacts to form non-PCB byproducts. Firefighters have to be able to read, understand, and act on complex written materials—not only fire law and fire procedures, but also scientific materials about fire, combustible materials, and chemicals. They have to be able to think clearly and independently because lives depend on decisions they make in a split second. They have to be able to do enough math to read and understand pressure gauges, or estimate the height of a building and the amount of hose needed to reach the third floor. They have to be able to read maps and floor plans so they can get to the emergency site quickly or find their way to an exit even in a smoke-filled building. [Pg.29]

There are three layers in decorative floor covering. The second and the third layers are made from PVC with composition given in the table above. It is clear that the joints were not sufficiently stiff to provide sway restraint. Although the first and third storey heights were to contain partitions the second storey height would have contained only non-load bearing partitions. As it happened none of the partitions were completed at the time of collapse. The structure was in a state of unstable equilibrium and it needed only a small disturbance to precipitate collapse. The failure of one of the joints on the second floor therefore triggered a collapse of the whole building. [Pg.133]

What is the connection between the rate of a process and its pathway Suppose that there are several hundred books in a storeroom on the first floor and that you have been hired to move them to the new third-floor library. Depending on the conditions, there are a variety of possible pathways. One pathway might require the following steps (1) put 10 books (the maximum number you can lift) into a carton, (2) carry the carton up one flight of stairs to the second floor, (3) rest a bit, (4) carry the carton up another flight of stairs to the third floor, (5) empty the carton, and (6) return for another load. Another pathway might involve a different series of steps (1) fill four cartons with books, (2) pile the cartons onto a dolly, (3) push the dolly onto the elevator, (4) ride to the third floor, (5) push the dolly off the elevator, (6) empty the four cartons, and (7) return for another load. The second pathway would probably be faster than the first. To compare them quantitatively, the rate for each pathway could be measured in books moved per hour. [Pg.169]
