Supporting columns

The location of exchangers is the key to maintenance. Usually the back head is kept at a distance of about three meters from the piperack support columns. Access equipment must be able to get in and remove the sheU cover and flange head. Access area must also be provided to handle and remove the sheU cover usually located under the piperack. The tube-pulling or rodding-out area must be kept clear to allow access to the channel end. This space should be at least equal to the tube length and about two meters from the tube sheet location. Tube removal space should be allowed for but is not mandatory if grade-mounted heat exchangers are used and mobile maintenance equipment employed to pick up the entire unit and transfer it to the repair shop. 

Figure 12 shows the plan and elevation views of a process unit piping (9). A dmm is supported off the piperack. Heat exchangers are located far enough back from the support columns so that they are accessible and their shell covers can be removed. Pumps are located underneath the piperack, but sufficient room is provided for maintenance equipment to access the motors and to remove the pump if necessary. The motor is always oriented away from the process equipment and located on that side of the piperack. Instmment valve drops are shown supported from the columns. The instmment trays themselves mn on the outside of the support columns. Flat turns are only made from the outside position of the piperack. Nozzle-to-nozzle pipe mns are made whenever possible. Larger lines are located on the outside of the piperack. Connections to nozzles above the rack are made from the top... 

Cone-Roof Tanks. Cone-roof tanks are cylindrical shells having a vertical axis of symmetry. The bottom is usually flat and the top made ia the form of a shallow cone. These are the most widely used tanks for storage of relatively large quantities of fluid because they are economic to build and the market supports a number of contractors capable of building them. They can be shop-fabricated ia small sizes but are most often field-erected. Cone-roof tanks typically have roof rafters and support columns except ia very small-diameter tanks when they are self-supporting (see Fig. 4b and c Table 3). 

Note that the chutes are fabricated of standard FRP sections with reinforcing rib members. Sections are bolted together. Note also that an integral support column is necessary for safety chutes extending above a second floor. The radius of the chute is shown as 6 -0" at the bottom. 

Support columns should be fireproofed from grade up to the equipment support level. 

Columns and beams that transmit the equipment load to support columns should also be fireproofed (see Figure 8-6). 

The physical panel size used resulted in more joints between panels than would have been the case in a Portland cement pour, owing to the surface finishing with a screed and the continuous obstruction of the existing support columns. Asphalt expansion strips were placed between panels and were provided with a removable top strip which was filled with a polyurethane compound. Shrinkage of pours in this work was negligible. Shrinkage in sulfur concrete was proportional to the amount of sulfur binder used.

Similarly, the calibration graph may be non-linear, particularly if peak heights are used as a quantitative parameter, and during manipulations with low concentrations of the solute when its adsorption on the surface of the support, column walls, etc., occurs to a significant extent. Fig. 1.2 illustrates the improvement that was obtained by the conversion of the sample compound.
