Make a small hole in the crystal slightly less than the length of the hand from the center of the crystal. Insert the screw from the front of the crystal and tighten it so that it projects from the concave side. Carefully scrape any paint from the edge of the hand where it will make contact with the screw. Replace the crystal in the watch. See Figure 10. [Pg.11]

Sualitative analysis of the screw heads did show the corroded film on Le screws was the metal fluorides. New screws were used in each run, and the necessary thermal corrections were made on the data for this side reaction. The detector holder, clamps and cooling rod in a standard detector would normally be of OFHC copper, but selected copper of much higher purity would be used for a low background system. A berylhum window will be of specially selected material stainless-steel screws replaced by brass or low-cobalt stainless-steel and rubber O-rings might be replaced by indium metal. Mechanical Pressing. Historically, the first large commercial production of oils from seeds and nuts was carried out using labor-intensive hydraulic presses. These were gradually replaced by more efficient mechanical and screw presses. Solvent extraction was developed for extraction of seeds having low oil content. For seeds and nuts having higher oil content, a combination of a screw press followed by solvent extraction is a common commercial practice (prepress—solvent extraction). [Pg.129]

An important variation of this filter is based on replacing the rigid outer waU necessary for containing the feed and the cake on the rotating table by an endless mbber belt. The belt is held under tension and rotates with the table. It is in contact with the table rim except for the sector where the discharge screw is positioned, and where the belt is deflected away from the table to aUow the soHds to be pushed off the table. The cloth can also be washed in this section by high pressure water sprays. Expression Dewaterings of Fibrous Materials. Fibrous materials are frequently dewatered in belt-filter, screw, disk, and roU presses and in batch pot and cage presses. Another version of the dewatering screw that has been used successfully in a number of installations (Figure 40) consists of an inclined screw with a box-like back end and an internal overflow weir. The drive is usually a variable-speed motor reducer. Brass water fittings give no trouble except that dezincification may occur in acid waters or waters of high chloride content, especially when hot. This dezincification has three effects. Firstly, the replacement of brass by porous copper may extend right through the wall of the fitting and permit water to seep through. Secondly, the zinc which is dissolved out of the brass may form very voluminous hard corrosion products and eventually block the waterway —this is often the case in hot soft waters. Thirdly, and often the most important, the mechanical properties of the brass may deteriorate. For instance, a dezincified screwed union will break off when an attempt is made to unscrew it and a dezincified tap or ball-valve seat is readily eroded by the water. [Pg.60]

If laboratory personnel are expected to perform repairs and maintenance, the proper tools must be available. This is particularly true in an educational laboratory, where stockroom personnel have a multitude of repair and maintenance jobs to perform. Only the highest quality tools should be purchased, as they will cost less in the long run. A cheap screwdriver, for instance, will soon begin to wear and damage screws that are hard to replace. It may even slip and cause injury. An almost right wrench will damage nuts beyond use. A cheap wire cutter may leave a few strands of wire uncut, an annoying and possibly hazardous condition. [Pg.132]
