Plastic meshes

For other mesh densities, use k(52) of 0.4 for 5 Ib/cu ft mesh (high capacity), and 0.3 for plastic mesh such as Teflon and polypropylene. [Pg.247]

In this process, dissolved electrolytes are removed by application of electromotive force across a battery of semipermeable membranes constructed from cation and anion exchange resins. The cation membrane passes only cations and the anion membrane only anions. The two kinds of membranes are stacked alternately and separated about 1mm by sheets of plastic mesh that are still provided with flow passages. When the membranes and spacers are compressed together, holes in the comers form appropriate conduits for inflow and outflow. Membranes are 0.15-0.6 mm thick. A commercial stack may contain several hundred compartments or pairs of membranes in parallel. A schematic of a stack assembly is... [Pg.508]

Membranes may be manufactured by mixing powdered ion exchange resin with a solution of binder polymer and pouring the heated mixture under pressure onto a plastic mesh or cloth. The concentration of the ion exchanger is normally 50-70%. They are chiefly copolymers of styrene and divinylbenzene, sulfonated with sulfuric acid for introduction of the cation exchange group. [Pg.510]

Drop size measurements were made on water sensitive papers exposed inside cooling towers at various levels. Results are given for samples taken under eliminators, over eliminators and high in towers. Design and operational factors which affect the values are discussed. Droplet removal efficiencies are given for conventional louvre eliminators and for louvre eliminators modified with plastic meshes. [Pg.291]

The uses and end points measured for enclosure studies are similar to mesocosms, but here a portion of the natural environment is enclosed and manipulated, rather than constructing an artificial system. Manipulations include adding previously unexposed organisms to an enclosure in a contaminated environment, or applying test chemicals to an enclosed portion of a noncontaminated environment. Terrestrial enclosures are usually corrals fenced in by wire or plastic mesh or impermeable barriers such as metal or plastic sheets. They may range from < 1 m to more than a hectare. Aquatic enclosures may include a section of the shoreline fenced off by plastic curtains (littoral enclosures) or boxes made of flexible plastic sheets suspended in open water (limno-corrals). Small enclosures are used to monitor acute toxicity or sublethal effects, while larger enclosures may study population, community, or ecosystem level end points. [Pg.928]

In the process under study here, where S02 oxidation is the limiting half reaction, the electrolyte flow rates are controlled by volumetric pumps to ensure forced convection. Moreover, both the anode and cathode compartments are provided with a plastic mesh turbulence promoter. The flow is therefore assumed fully turbulent and a uniform velocity profile is assumed at the inlet. However, for simplification, these devices are not represented in the simulation domain. Although the turbulence promoter should actually influence the bubble population, no reference has been found on its effects. [Pg.14]

Test vessel type and size Adults large aquarium or fiberglass or stainless steel raceways side of tank should be opaque and at least 30 cm high Breeding Adults 5- or 10-gal aquarium fitted with a 1-cm mesh suspended approximately 3 cm from the bottom of the tank nylon or plastic mesh is recommended aquarium should be fitted with a bubbler to oxygenate the water the top of aquarium should be covered with an opaque porous material such as a fiberglass furnace filter Embryos 60-mm glass or 55-mm disposable polystyrene Petri dishes... [Pg.90]

The main hydrogen stream from the cell is also hot and wet. Since hydrogen has a low solubility in water, it is usually cooled and cleaned of chlorine, salt, etc., by a direct, countercurrent contact with a cool spray of dilute sodium hydroxide in water. Clean hydrogen exits from the top of the cooler through baffles or plastic mesh placed so as to remove entrained water droplets. [Pg.228]

When the solvent appears at the outlet, apply nitrogen pressure to the column to give a linear flow rate of approx 1-2 cm/min. (It is recommended to use plastic mesh around the column and a nitrogen regulator equipped with a safety valve.)... [Pg.133]

Finally, the AD/MAA fiber was immersed in 2.5 (w /v)% KOH solution at 353 K for 1 h. Prior to the uranium adsorption experiments, the fibers were repeatedly washed with deionized water. The uranium adsorption rate of the hydrophilic AO fibers was evaluated in a submerged mode of operation in the ocean far from the coast of Japan about 0.5 g of the AO /MAA fiber was charged in a container made of plastic mesh, which was attached to the outside of a frame (adsorption unit) made of stainless steel 30 cm in diameter and 10 cm in height, as illustrated in Figure 21. The adsorption units were submerged for 20 days 15 m below the surface of the sea located about six kilometers off the coast of Mutsu Sekine-Hama in Aomori Prefecture. The fibers... [Pg.693]
