In this chapter we focus our discussion on paleoaltimetry studies that use hydrous silicates as isotope proxies. It is our hope that scientists from the various subdisciplines of Earth Sciences interested in paleoaltimetry and paleoclimate will take advantage of the integrative approach we propose in order to gain a more complete understanding of the long-term topographic evolution of orogens.

Averill, Eds., Elsevier 1999, 582 pp., ISSN 0167-2991 (Vol. 123 in the Studies in Surface Science and Catalysis series). This is one of the few books that cover all categories of catalysis. It is written by 25 different authors, and like many other such collections, this is both a blessing and a curse. The advantage is that each chapter is written by specialists who are discussing research subjects dear to their hearts. The disadvantage is that the overall result is somewhat disjointed. 

In The Sciences An Integrated Approach, Trefil and Hazen present great unifying ideas or themes in science and include a web of how the great idea has been applied in different science disciplines. In many cases, the application in the different disciplines requires an understanding of basic chemistry. Although both the laboratory and industrial scale materials science of catalysts requires an integrated approach as already mentioned above, it is customary to classify the characterization methods by their objects and experimental tools used. I will use the object classification and direct the introductory comments to analysis, primarily elemental and molecular surface analysis, determination of geometric structure, approaches toward the determination of electronic structure, characterization by chemisorption and reaction studies, determination of pore structure, morphology, and texture, and, finally, the role of theory in interpreting the often complex characterization data as well as predicting reaction paths.

We have already discussed various approaches such as chemistry as a part of general science, integrated science etc. for study of chemistry. Another view that has been discussed earlier is to have a core syllabus and an optional syllabus. 

These NCERT developed science textbooks were written on integrated approach, and not as separate textbook of physics, chemistry and life science, as it is clear from the sequence of chapters in the two textbooks.
