No mirex degradation products were detected in whole fathead minnow or in hydrosoils under aerobic or anaerobic conditions (Huckins et al. 1982). In contrast, three metabolites were detected in coastal marshes after mirex bait application, one of which, photomirex, was accumulated by fish and oysters (Cripe and Livingston 1977). The fate and effects of mirex photoproducts in the environment are unclear and merit additional research.

Geopressured Zones. A test well in a geopressure zone was drilled some years ago in Tigre Lagoon in the coastal marshes of southern Louisiana Known as Edna Delcambre 1, this well produced at a rate of np to 10,000 barrels of water per day from a sandstone aquifer some 12,600 feet (3840 meters) below the surface. Pressure at that depth is nearly 11,000 pounds per square inch (748 atmospheres) and the temperature is 116°C. Quite an elaborate manifold system is requited to collect the gas. Degradation of ecosystems During the last decades, more than a half of the Earth s wetlands (from coastal marshes to intra-continental lowlands exposed to floods) has been lost due to various measures taken by humans, about half of virgin forests have been liquidated, 30% of the remaining forests have degraded. In 1999, the scale of the use of wood as a fuel and in industry had more than doubled as against 1950.

The focus on oxidized forms of sulfur also meant that comparatively little was known about the more reduced sulfur gases until recently. The presence of hydrogen sulfide had been evident in volcanic regions and on coastal marshes because of its strong smell, but the detection of atmospheric organosulfides had to await the development of gas chromatographic methods and sensitive detectors.
