Pump-probe absorption experiments on the femtosecond time scale generally fall into two effective types, depending on the duration and spectral width of the pump pulse. If tlie pump spectrum is significantly narrower in width than the electronic absorption line shape, transient hole-burning spectroscopy [101. 102. 103. 104. 105. 106. 107. 108. 109. 110. 111. 112 and 113] can be perfomied. The second type of experiment, dynamic absorption spectroscopy [57, 114. 115. 116. 117. 118. 119. 120. 121 and 122], can be perfomied if the pump and probe pulses are short compared to tlie period of the vibrational modes that are coupled to the electronic transition. 

Purification of specialty gases can be divided into two areas purification done by the gas suppHer on a bulk scale prior to filling the cylinder or other dehvery container, and purification carried out by the consumer on a point-of-use scale generally just prior to use. 

Scales are sensitive to force appHed in one direction only, eg, a scale with a horizontal platform is sensitive to forces appHed perpendicular to the platform. Scales should be leveled before calibration and whenever they are moved portable scales generally have a bubble level to facilitate leveling. 

Portable scales generally have a platform near the floor with the indicator mounted on a column for ease of operation. These scales may be on wheels, and many are battery-powered. Capacities are generally less than 600 kg. Bench scales can be placed on a wheeled table for similar use.

Cardiovascular Effects. There is currently considerable scientific debate as to whether there is a causal relationship between lead exposure and hypertension. Another area of controversy is whether African Americans are more susceptible to the cardiovascular effects of lead than are whites or Hispanics. The evidence from both occupational studies and large-scale general population studies (i.e., National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey [NHANES II], British Regional Heart Study [BRHS]) is not sufficient to conclude that such a causal relationship exists between PbB levels and increases in blood pressure. The database on lead-induced effects on cardiovascular function in humans will be discussed by presenting a summary of several representative occupational studies followed by a discussion of the findings from the large-scale general population studies.

MLF are composed of a number of computational elements, called neurons, generally organized in three layers (Marini, 2009). In the first one, the input layer, there are usually N neurons which correspond to the original predictor. The predictors are scaled (generally range scaled). When the number of original predictors is very high, the PCs may be used, in order to reduce the data amount and the computational time.

These CSPs are also popular for the separation of many drug enantiomers and for amino acid analysis. Primarily, direct chiral resolution of racemic compounds were achieved on these CSPs. However, in some cases, prederivatization of racemic compounds with achiral reagents is required. The applications of these phases are discussed considering re-acidic, re-basic, and re-acidic-basic types of CSP. These CSPs have also been found effective for the chiral resolution on a preparative scale. Generally, the normal phase mode was used for the chiral resolution on these phases. However, with the development of new and more stable phases, the reversed phase mode became popular. 

Calibration of the pressure is best accomplished using the Ruby scale. Generally this is done using a metal gasket between the two diamond windows surrounding the sample in which a liquid (such as Nujol or Teflon oil) is added to produce hydrostatic pressure. The technique measures the pressure dependence of the sharp Ruby Ri fluorescence transition at 692.8 nm, although the R2 band at 694.2 nm can also be used. The Ruby fluorescence is induced by the blue excitation of the Ar+ (488.0 nm) or the He- C d (441.6nm) lasers. 

VI.3 SYSTEMATIC ANALYSIS ON THE SEMIMICRO SCALE. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS The object of systematic qualitative analysis on the semimicro scale is not only to detect the constituents of a given mixture, an equally important aim is to ascertain the approximate relative amounts of each component. For this purpose about 0-2 g of material is usually employed for the analysis the relative magnitudes of the various precipitates will provide a rough guide as to the proportions of the constituents present.
