In general, it is beneficial to attain the proper surface state for each particular application. The correct surface preparation of bio-materials is particularly important for orthodontic and other biomedical implant applications or their reconstmctions.

Naturally occurring abrasives are still an important item of commerce, although synthetic abrasives now fill many of thek former uses. In 1987 about 156 million metric tons of natural abrasives were produced in the United States. Production was up from 1986 because of increased nonabrasive uses and increased use of garnet in sandblasting (4). 

Miscellaneous Natural Abrasives. Powdered feldspar [68476-25-5] is used as a mild abrasive in cleansing powders, and clays are sometimes used in polishing powders. StauroHte [12182-56-8] is a complex hydrated aluminosiHcate of kon, of high density (3.74—3.83 g/mL) and a hardness of 7 to 8 on Mohs scale. It is primarily used as a sandblasting grit, but siHcosis hazards had cut production in 1987 about 25% compared to that... 

Substrate Properties. It is clear from equation 5 that higher hardness of the substrate lowers friction. Wear rate of the film also is generally lower. Phosphate undercoats on steel considerably improve wear life of bonded coatings by providing a porous surface which holds reserve lubricant. The same is tme for surfaces that are vapor- or sandblasted prior to appHcation of the soHd-film lubricant. A number of typical surface pretreatments are given in Table 13 to prepare a surface for solid-film bonding (61). 

Interstitial Compounds. Tungsten forms hard, refractory, and chemically stable interstitial compounds with nonmetals, particularly C, N, B, and Si. These compounds are used in cutting tools, stmctural elements of kilns, gas turbines, jet engines, sandblast nozzles, protective coatings, etc (see also Refractories Refractory coatings). 

Uses. Apphcations for boron carbide relate either to its hardness or its high neutron absorptivity ( B isotope). Hot-pressed boron carbide finds use as wear parts, sandblast no22les, seals, and ceramic armor plates but in spite of its hardness, it finds Httie use as an abrasive. However, this property makes it particulady usehil for dressing grinding wheels. 

High pressure sprays of heated neutralized citric acid solutions replace sandblasting techniques to clean stainless steel equipment and areas not easily... 

Because the melting temperature range of Ni—Cr alloy is 1220—1345°C, it is necessary to heat the investment molds to 800—935°C. The castings should not be pickled in acid because of their high nickel content and should be cleaned by sandblasting. The alloys are generally hard and are difficult to finish and to abrade for clinical adjustment in the mouth. 

Sand and other forms of quartz are used as a powder in sandblasting. If a gender abrasive material is wanted, powdered walnut shells are often used.

Service company wastes such as empty drums, drum rinsate, vacuum truck rinsate, sandblast media, spent solvents, spilled chemicals, and waste acids... 

Few plant operators need to be told of the problems caused by water in compressed air. They are most apparent to those who operate pneumatic tools, rock drills, automatic pneumatic powered machinery, paint and other sprays, sandblasting equipment, and pneumatic controls. However, almost all applications, particularly of 100-psig power, could benefit from the elimination of water carryover. The principal problems might be summarized as ...

The amount of sand and other particles sucked from the soil must be viewed as a possible cause for bearing failure or for the generation of bearing noise (such effects can also be caused by the moisture). Noise can directly influence the occupant to shut down the SSD system. Sandblasting of the fan blades or plateout on the fan blades by particles sucked into the mitigation system could lead to degradation of fan performance over the long term.
