Salicylate contraindications

Discuss the types, uses, general drug actions, common adverse reactions, contraindications, precautions, and interactions of the salicylates and acetaminophen. [Pg.150]

Fludrocortisone is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to fludrocortisone and those with systemic fungal infections. Fludrocortisone is used cautiously in patients with Addison s disease infection, and during pregnancy (Pregnancy Category C) and lactation. Fludrocortisone decreases the effects of the barbiturates, hydantoins, and rifampin. There is a decrease in serum levels of the salicylates when those agents are administered with fludrocortisone... [Pg.525]

The keratolytics are contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drugs and for use on moles, birthmarks, or warts with hair growing from them, on genital or facial warts, on warts on mucous membranes, or on infected skin. Prolonged use of the keratolytics in infants or patients with diabetes or impaired circulation is contraindicated. Salicylic acid... [Pg.611]

Willow bark (weidenrinde, white willow, purple osier willow, crack willow) S lixalba, purpurea, fragilis Analgesic Adverse reactions are those associated with the salicylates Do not use with aspirin or other NSAIDs. Do not use in patients with peptic ulcers and other medical conditions in which the salicylates are contraindicated. [Pg.661]

There are few contraindications to combination salicylic acid/TCA peeling. The combination regimen is tolerated in all skin types and all ra-cial/ethnic groups. General contraindications include salicylate hypersensitivity unrealistic patient expectations active inflammation/der-... [Pg.105]

Contraindicated in patients who are anuric or uremic or have chronic respiratory acidosis or salicylate toxicity... [Pg.180]

Application of topical salicylates can lead to systemic effects, especially if the product is applied liberally. Repeated application and occlusion with a wrap or bandage also can increase systemic concentrations.41 Salicylate-containing counterirritants should be used with caution in patients in whom systemic salicylates are contraindicated, such as patients with severe asthma or aspirin allergy.42 Topical salicylates have been reported to increase prothrombin time in patients on warfarin and should be used with caution in patients on oral anticoagulants.43... [Pg.906]

NSAIDs are contraindicated after 37 weeks gestation. For refractory migraines, narcotics may be used. Salicylates and indomethacin should be avoided throughout pregnancy if possible. The use of sumatriptan is controversial. Nausea of migraines may be treated with metoclopramide. [Pg.369]

Salicylic acid is a keratolytic agent that removes layers of cornified skin cells. Treatment for corns, calluses and warts involves the application of salicylic acid at a concentration of 1 1-50%. Salicylic acid is contraindicated in allergic patients and its use should be avoided in diabetic patients. [Pg.300]

Exacerbation of gout Exacerbation of gout following therapy with probenecid may occur in such cases, colchicine or other appropriate therapy is advisable. Salicylates Use of salicylates is contraindicated in patients on probenecid therapy. Salicylates antagonize probenecid s uricosuric action. [Pg.947]

Aspirin is epidemiologically associated with Reye s syndrome, a rare but often fatal consequence of infection with varicella, influenza and various other viruses, and salicylates are therefore contraindicated in children with chicken pox or influenza. [Pg.439]

The use of aspirin in children and teenagers with either chickenpox or influenza is contraindicated, since there is evidence linking the use of the salicylates in such diseases to Reye s syndrome, a potentially fatal disease accompanied by liver damage and encephalopathy. The mechanism by which the use of salicylates increases the chances for development of Reye s syndrome is not known. [Pg.313]

The arylpropionic acid derivatives are useful for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, for reduction of mild to moderate pain and fever, and for pain associated with dysmenorrhea. Side effects of the drugs are similar to but less severe than those described for the salicylates. Those who are sensitive to salicylates also may be sensitive to and have adverse reactions when taking ibuprofen and related drugs. Acute hypersensitivity to ibuprofen has been reported in patients with lupus. The hypersensitivity reaction to sulindac can be fatal. The use of sulindac has also been linked to cases of acute pancreatitis. The use of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) topically in combination with sulindac has been reported to induce severe neuropathies. The concurrent use of ibuprofen with aspirin reduces the antiinflammatory effects of both drugs. Ibuprofen is contraindicated in patients with aspirin sensitivity leading to bronchiolar constriction and in patients with an-gioedema. As with all NSAIDs, renal and liver function should be normal for adequate clearance of the drugs. [Pg.315]

Sulfasalazine is contraindicated in individuals with hypersensitivity to salicylates, sulfonamides, sulfonylureas, and certain diuretics (furosemide, thiazides, and carbonic anhydrase inhibitors). Because it can cause kernicterus, sulfasalazine is contraindicated in infants and children under 2 years of age. Sulfasalazine passes into breast milk and is therefore contraindicated for nursing mothers. Similarly, pregnant women near term should not use this drug, although it appears to be the safest of the DMARDs during early pregnancy. [Pg.433]

Salicylates and anticholinergics are contraindicated in the management of DNOC-poisoned individuals because they may also potentiate the action of DNOC (Haddad and Winchester 1990). Because of the limited animal studies and understanding regarding the interaction between DNOC and proposed antidotes such as 4-methyl-2-thiouracil, chlorpromazine, and vitamins further animal testing would be useful before these dosages are used in cases of human DNOC toxicosis. [Pg.92]

The most important contraindications to salicylate therapy are listed in Box 7-1. As a general rule, when aspirin is contraindicated or is not well tolerated, acetaminophen... [Pg.100]

Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors should be used with caution in patients with respiratory acidosis or those with severe loss of respiratory capacity, and in patients with diabetes mellitus. They are contraindicated in patients with hepatic disease or insufficiency, reduced serum concentrations of sodium or potassium, adrenocortical insufficiency, hyperchloremic acidosis, or severe renal disease or dysfunction. They should also be avoided in patients taking salicylates. [Pg.645]
