Other offices within ODER may become involved in the review process via consults. Eor example, the Office of Epidemiology and Biostatistics analyzes statistical data, the Office of Research Resources provides bioavailabiHty reviews, and the Office of Compliance determines from the results of inspections whether the firms meet EDA s Current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) regulations. Advisory committees composed of independent experts are often asked to meet and further analyze the data. Often they also advise as to what additional data and information may be needed. After PDA s review is completed, PDA issues either a Summary Basis of Approval (SBA) for the dmg or a recommendation against approval. If approved, PDA releases the SBA and a summary of the safety and effectiveness data to the general pubHc. [Pg.84]

Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS). The MSDS CD-ROM is a useful resource that contains over 33,000 MSDS on chemicals submitted to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) by chemical manufacturers. This resource contains complete Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) information as well as other important information such as the chemical formula, structure, physical properties, synonyms, registry number, and safety information. [Pg.107]

Refer to Section 9.8.The risk-based approach directs resources to address issues according to risk levels to assure the safety and quality of drug products being manufactured. [Pg.317]

Since SYSCO does not itself manufacture, a quality assurance team of more than 180 professionals determines specifications for each own-brand item and also sets criteria for raw materials and for the standards that manufacturers and processors must follow for food safety, quality, and consistency, as well as for social responsibility and supplier codes of conduct. This quality assurance team identifies and establishes supply sources and audits those suppliers to enforce SYSCO s strict standards for various factors like facility conditions and sanitary measures. Inspectors are at the plants as bacon comes off the production line, or follow produce from field to cooler to assure proper holding temperatures and product integrity. SYSCO s program is unmatched in the food industry. The number of people and level of resources committed to supporting the integrity of the products are far superior to those of other industry competitors, who may devote merely a handful of personnel to these tasks, if they are undertaken at all. [Pg.81]

This is not to say that chemists in the chemical industry had or have no interest in designing safer commercial chemicals, or do not strive to make useful chemicals that are safe - quite the contrary, as this chapter and others in this book illustrate. However, since there are no pre-market test requirements for characterizing the safety of new commercial chemicals, there is a considerably small driving force for chemical manufacturers to devote resources to designing chemicals that are commercially efficacious and safe. More bluntly, because it is relatively inexpensive under the TSCA to get a new commercial chemical on the market, enactment of the TSCA did not lead to the evolution of a new type of chemist analogous to the medicinal chemist in the case of drugs. Thus, despite the enactment of the TSCA over 3 5 years ago, the status quo in the chemical industry has persisted. [Pg.7]

On May 7, the jury in Pocatello, ID, found that Allan Elias ordered employees of Evergreen Resources, a fertilizer manufacturing company he owned, to enter and clean out a 25,000-gallon storage tank containing cyanide without taking required precautions to protect his employees. Occupational Safety and Health Administration inspectors repeatedly had warned Elias... [Pg.18]
