Syntheses of Quinolines. The large number of alkaloids and medicinal compounds which contain the quinoline ring has created a long and active search for synthetic routes. Several classical routes were developed in the nineteenth century and, with many modifications, are still used. [Pg.390]

Isoquinolines are used in catalytic (191), photographic (192), and dye appHcations (193). A great many alkaloids and synthetic medicinal compounds are isoquinoline derivatives. The principal dmgs containing this stmcture marketed in the United States are Hsted in Table 4. [Pg.398]

Scarcely a single issue of Chemical Abstracts is published without reference to medicinal compounds containing the pyrazine or quinoxaline ring in some form, and hence it is impractical to list all applications of pyrazines, quinoxalines and phenazines. Some of the more important applications and natural products, particularly the more recent developments, are mentioned in this Section. [Pg.191]

Inorganic or metal-containing medicinal compounds may contain either (a) chemical elements essential to life forms—iron salts used in the treatment of anemia—or (b) nonessential/toxic elements that carry out specific medicinal purposes—platinum-containing compounds as antitumor agents or technetium... [Pg.265]

Various tests are prescribed in the offcial compendia to control heavy metal e.g., Ag+, Hg2+, Pb2+, Bi2+, Cu2+, As3+,, Sb3+ and Sn4+ contamination in organic pharmaceutical substances. Hence, a stringent limit is recommended for the presence of heavy metals in medicinal compounds. [Pg.15]

During the past four decades a plethora of newer complex organic medicinal compounds have taken cognizance in the therapeutic armamentarium. Evidently, these compounds posed two vital problems of quality control, both in pure and dosage forms by virtue of their inherent characteristics, namely ... [Pg.106]

In case, the organic medicinal compound is acidic in nature e.g., amobarbital in sodium amobarbital tablets, it is first and foremost extracted with an aqueous solution of an acid or base to cause separation from the neutral substance which might be present. The resulting aqueous solution of the salt of the respective organic medicinal compound is subsequently made acidic and the liberated organic acid (amobarbital) is finally extracted with ether or chloroform. [Pg.181]

Interestingly, in a situation where either magnesium stearate or stearic acid forms a component in the formulation, the organic medicinal compound which is acidic (amobarbital) cannot be extracted with NaOH solution for obvious reason that sodium stearate shall also be extracted along with the salt of the organic acid. Therefore, instead a saturated solution of Ba(OH)2 is employed thereby the insoluble precipitate of barium stearate may be discarded by filtration. [Pg.181]

The survey of literature provides ample evidence of the NMR spectra of a good number of medicinal compounds belonging to various categories, namely sulphonamides barbiturates amphetamines steroids antihistamines penicillins and cephalosporins to name a few. [Pg.353]

The health sciences are a group of disciplines that draw upon chemistry, physics, and biology. How does chemistry relate to the health sciences Knowing about molecular structure and function allows biochemists to synthesize medicinal compounds on a large scale, and even to design new molecules to fight diseases and their symptoms. Understanding the chemical role of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals in the body helps... [Pg.564]

Second, many macrocycles possess biological activities, that are unrivaled by more traditional small ring medicinal compounds. This combination of high activity and especially selectivity gives macrocycles an enormous potential in drug development, which is illustrated by the great importance of the macrolide antibiotics such as erythromycin or vancomycin for the treat-... [Pg.139]

The commercial availability of basic pyridine derivatives has encouraged a tremendous amount of research into pharmaceutically active compounds. Two reviews in particular list a large number of medicinal compounds (B-80MI20900,77CZ389) based on the pyridine ring. Likewise, the occurrence of benzopyridine natural products with chemotherapeutic activity has stimulated the production of synthetic materials from aromatic amine precursors. Some important examples are presented below. [Pg.516]

Much has been said about the application of this heterocyclic system in supramolecular chemistry and in materials chemistry, particularly in the preparation of organic conductors and superconductors. It should not be forgotten however that heterocyclic compounds in general are extremely important medicinal compounds. Although medicinal applications of this heterocyclic system have been rare in the years since CHEC-II(1996), some have been reported. Townsend and co-workers have described the preparation of imidazo[4,5-r/ isothiazole nucleosides 174-177 and have demonstrated their properties as antiproliferative and antiviral analogues of the antibiotic nebularine 172 and the highly cytotoxic 6-methylpurine nucleoside 173 <1997JME771>. [Pg.185]

Due to an unusual relationship between its sorptive properties and the molecular weight of substances adsorbed, Enterosgel practically does not bind medicinal compounds administered orally, because in the majority of cases they have molecular weight below 1,500 Da. This characteristic of Enterosgel opens many prospective avenues for its use in combined treatment of chronic diseases associated with prolonged use of toxic pharmacologic preparations. [Pg.216]

The writings of Sylvius were first published between 1659 and 1674, all on medical subjects primarily, unless we except his brief treatise on Chemical Medicines,10 which is practically confined to the various medicinal compounds of antimony— flowers, liver, regulus, glass, antimony diaphoreticum, butter of antimony, the latter made by distilling crude antimony (that is sulphide) with mercury sublimate (that is mercuric chloride). These compounds were, however, all known by 1600 and well summarized in pseudo-Basilius s (Tholden s) Currus Tri-umphalis Antimonii. [Pg.390]
