Safety Data Sheets MSDSs

Chemical manufacturers shall obtain or develop an MSDS for each hazardous chemical. These MSDSs should be sent to the distributor or user prior to or with the initial chemical shipment. An MSDS 

The MSDSs may differ considerably depending on the manufacturer but must contain basically the same information. They must be in English and contain no blank spaces. Any MSDS that contains blank spaces is considered unacceptable and should be returned to the vendor, or the missing information can be requisitioned from that vendor. The complete MSDS contains the following information in English (the employer may also maintain copies in other languages)  

Physical and chemical characteristics of the hazardous chemical such as vapor pressure or flashpoint 

Physical hazards of the hazardous chemical Health hazards of the hazardous chemical Primary routes of entry

Pyrophoric and other spontaneously combustible substances will generally be identified as such on their product literature, material safety data sheets (MSDSs), or International Chemical Safety Cards (ICSCs). If transported, these substances should be identified as DOT/UN Hazard Class 4.2 materials for shipping purposes and labeled as spontaneously combustible. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) are published by the company that manufactures the material covered on the sheet. Citations should include the title of the data sheet, which is the name of the material the MSDS number the manufacturing company the location of the company and the date on which the document was released. The HCS, also known as the Employee Right-to-Know Law, is basically concerned with the exposure of workers to hazardous chemicals in the workplace. Under this standard, since 1986, all manufacturers, importers, and distributors of hazardous chemicals have had to label the containers they ship, listing the ingredients and hazards of the material in the containers, and provide Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) to all downstream users, handlers, and storers of these chemicals.
