Safety attitudes and

In addition to good, when employees are considered for promotion, their safety attitude and record is considered... [Pg.183]

Ten employees on Outward Bound challenge in Colorado, an experience reflecting on safety skills and awareness needing back at their jobs. Teamwork, staying calm, knowing your limits, replacing casual habits with careful skills, proper equipment, safety attitude, and safety as a duty. [Pg.187]

For employees, the policy statement is the declaration of an intent to achieve a goal. However, employees are skeptical of bureaucratic policies and look for more solid evidence of management commitment. Thus, the timing and sequence of health- and safety-related decisions demonstrate how the policy will be implemented and the importance of health and safety considerations. A health and safety pohcy with no follow-through is worthless and in fact may be damaging to employee morale by showing employees a lack of management commitment. This can backfire and can lead to poor employee safety attitudes and behaviors. Thus, an employer has to put the money where the mouth is to demonstrate commitment. If not, a policy is an empty promise. [Pg.1179]

Burt, C. D. B., Chmiel, N., Hayes, P. (2009). Implications of turnover for safety attitudes and behaviour in work teams. Safety Science, 47, 1002—1006. [Pg.71]

Safety management normally experiences more resistance than any other aspect introduced into an organization. The safety culture that is embedded in the organization tends to prevail in the future. Safety attitudes and behaviors experienced in the past tend to be carried over to the future. These can only be changed with a deep, ongoing, and concerted effort to make the implementation of the safety system work. [Pg.60]

The idea of teaching specific safety attitudes and behaviours is unusual in healthcare but deeply embedded in a number of hazardous industries. For instance, the Western Mining Corporation in Western Australia is an exemplar of creating error wisdom within its organization and front line staff. Their motto is Take time, take charge, which aims to get workers to stop and think, to... [Pg.321]

Team leadership in all its forms is particularly critical in high risk activities. For example, team leaders influence safety attitudes and behaviour in the workplace, such as compliance with safety related rules and procedures and are key to the effective management of emergencies (Flin and Yule, 2004). Rigid hierarchies in healthcare teams may not be conducive to high quality care however, leadership, clarity of purpose and roles remain critical. [Pg.348]

Aim 1 to study safety attitude- and safety culture-related factors that have contributed to the accidents in the cases... [Pg.117]

In this study, several accident factors (classes) were identified (see Table 1). The factors were separated into two main groups (1) basic information and (2) information related to safety attitudes and safety cultures. The first one included 11 classes and the latter one 8 classes. Three drivers and one cleaning company s mechanic died in these four accidents at work. Two victims worked on the tank and two inside the tank. Two workers cause of death (affected factor) was toxic vapours of raw turpentine and the other two lack of oxygen (for more details, see more Table 1 and the investigation reports) inside the tank. The time of day was, in three cases, probably in the evening, whereas in one case the time is not clear from the investigation report. The rest of the basic information classes created are in the Table 1. [Pg.119]

Another main group is comprised of the information related to safety attitudes and safety culture. The work experience of victims was mainly considered sufficient. Instead, there were serious deficiencies in the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Respirators were not in use there were not available at all or they were improper for the working conditions in which workers used them. Other workers noticed the possible accident quite soon in two cases and after a while in one accident (when they returned from the break room). One driver was working alone. [Pg.119]

Information related to safety attitudes and safety culture... [Pg.120]

Education of employees is just as important as training. The purpose of safety education is to create a positive safety attitude and change behavior. Effective training makes sure the employees understand why the safety rule, procedure, or requirement is important. Safety training is concerned with helping the employee develop the needed abilities, knowledge, and skills to use safety equipment or perform procedures safely. [Pg.446]

Safety factors greatly depend on company culture, safety attitudes, and maintenance philosophy. There are huge numbers of equipment from several... [Pg.902]

Develop, by action and example, a positive health and safety attitude and a clear understanding of specific responsibilities in each member of management. [Pg.48]

Various study methodologies, including statistical and epidemiological analyses, studies of safety attitudes and safety behavior, case studies, nearaccident studies, motion and work experiments, interviews and others, have been conducted over... [Pg.123]

In contrast, values and culture are the most difficult to measure reliably and influence directly. This book gives you specific techniques for managing behaviors to promote supportive safety attitudes and values. Put them all together and eventually you will construct an integrated Total Safety Culture. [Pg.47]

Creation of positive safety attitudes and alertness. Severe accident occurrences will shape the accident perceptions of those concerned. A well-functioning programme for accident and near-accident reporting, investigation and follow-up will support the development of a positive climate for safety-related behaviour and awareness. [Pg.146]
