The negative role of pesticides in mammal life became clear several decades ago. OCP concentrations in the subcutaneous fat of seals (Pusa balded) from the Baltic Sea reached 300 mg/kg. Marine mammals living in the median latitudes of the northern hemisphere are more contaminated by DDT than animals of the southern hemisphere because of industrial development [6]. 

In response to the concern expressed by the shellfish farmers operating in the Ebro River delta about the potential positive role of pesticides on the oyster and mussel mortalities observed in the area, our group, commissioned by and with the collaboration of the Catalan Water Agency (ACA), carried out a comprehensive study in which chemical and toxicity data were combined to assess potential toxic presures present in the delta. To this end, a combined approach scheme integrating the measurement of various general physicochemical parameters in water, quantitative chemical analysis of pesticides in water and biota, and ecotoxicity assays in water was applied to a series of samples collected at springtime (between mid-April and mid-June 2008) from six selected sites of the delta the two (northern and southern)...

With the development of sustainable development indicators also moving into the role of pesticides and their impact on the environment, clearly, sound statistical information was required, particularly if the role of policy changes on pesticide use was to be assessed over time. Furthermore, an important target of the European Union s (EU) 5th Environmental Action Programme was the reduction of pesticide risk, but this would be impossible to monitor without sound information on changes in use over time.

One approach to restoration of herbicidal activity in problem soils has been the use of microbial/enzymatic inhibitors (20). Stauffer Chemical Company (now ICI Americas) has provided leadership for the agrochemical industry in this area and provided potential inhibitors to university scientists for validation. Kaufman et al. (21) had earlier suggested the use of inhibitors to improve the performance of herbicides with short residual lives in soils. Kaufman et al. (3) discussed the role of pesticides as inducers, substrates, and/or inhibitors of degradative enzymes in soil microorganisms and gave selected examples of specific pesticides as inducers and others as inhibitors of certain enzymes. They also considered the potential of "multiproblem" soils.
