GRI considers SNG from Oil Shale to have lower priority then coal since coal is far advanced in the development cycle. In reviewing developments to date, no real advantages have been determined in oil shale gasification over coal. Therefore, GRI decided that SNG from Oil Shale will be held at the PDU level until the coal program is fully developed or whenever the resumption of development of the shale program is warranted.

The composition and function of desoxyribonucleic acids have been studied extensively in recent years, and wider knowledge of the behavior of 2-desoxy-D-ribose became urgent. In this review developments in nucleic acid chemistry which have led to advances in our knowledge of 2-desoxypentoses (and vice versa) will be stressed.

The sixth paper, " Optimization of Xylose Fermentation in Spent Sulfite Liquor by Saccharomyces cerevisiae 259ST," presented by Steven Helle of the University of British Columbia, provided an overview of an approach to fermentation optimization utilized to identify key process variables limiting use of the SSL for commercial ethanol production. 

Section 6 reviews developments in cross-polarization and spin diffusion/ exchange. This section is closely related to Section 4 because of the interplay between these spin dynamics processes and the recoupling schemes at highspeed spinning, which now is almost invariably used for high resolution. Actually, many recoupling techniques were motivated by effecting crosspolarization and spin diffusion under fast MAS. 

A calibration check of controllers should be made on a regular basis. The ISO 9000 standard reviews developing the frequency calibration checks. The second and third parts of this review develop, through correlation of the results described in the first part, a picture of the hydration process and the hydration shell (Section VI) and an assessment of how the hydration shell may modulate enzyme and other protein functions (Section VII). The literature on protein hydration is now rich enough to provide a comfortably detailed picture of the protein-water interface. The ways in which the interface enters into function are just beginning to emerge, and one purpose here is to point out directions in which one may move to understand better the relationship to function. Sections VI and VII are meant to stand alone as summary statements, and some overlap with the preceding sections describing results should be expected. 

The approach being taken for development of specific procedures and methods is to first review the literature on a given topic, and then based on this review develop a method written in accordance with ISO guidelines (Fig.l). The large numbers of compounds synthesized by HTOS and purified by HTP require high throughput analysis and quality assessment. Mass spectrometry is commonly used for this purpose. Research and development in the analysis of libraries have been focused primarily on the improvement of throughput and automation in the analysis, interpretation, and reporting of data. Morand et al. have recently reviewed development of high throughput mass spectrometry in pharmaceutical research [20] for the analysis of chemical library compounds. Also, the use of one or more auxiliary detection techniques, such as UV or ELSD in addition to mass spectrometry, allows for better assessment of the purity of library compounds.
