For reasons that are not fiiUy understood, PPSF exhibits generally improved compatibiUty characteristics over either PSF or PES in a number of systems. An example of this is blends of PPSF with polyaryletherketones (39,40). These blends form extremely finely dispersed systems with synergistic strength, impact, and environmental stress cracking resistance properties. Blends of PPSF with either PSF or PES are synergistic in the sense that they exhibit the super-toughness characteristic of PPSF at PSF or PES contents of up to 35 wt % (33,34). The corrosion behavior of tantalum is weU-documented (46). Technically, the excellent corrosion resistance of the metal reflects the chemical properties of the thermal oxide always present on the surface of the metal. This very adherent oxide layer makes tantalum one of the most corrosion-resistant metals to many chemicals at temperatures below 150°C. Infectious patients present a difficult challenge when trying to protect health care workers. These patients must be isolated from the health care workers as well as from the other patients in the hospital. Special isolation rooms are used for this purpose. These rooms are generally used for isolation of infectious tuberculosis (TB) patients, but could be used for patients with other airborne-transmitted diseases. In the United States, there were 22 812 new cases of tuberculosis in 1993, equal to 8.7 per 100 000 population. This represents a 2.8% increase since 1985, following a 6-7% annual decline from 1981-1984.Several studies have documented higher than expected tuberculin skin test (TST) conversion rates in hospital personnel.The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health " reports that multiple-drug-resistant (MDR) strains of TB have been reported in 40 states and have caused outbreaks in at least 21 hospitals, with 18-35% of exposed workers having documented TST conversions. [Pg.1001]

The NR compound 4 is known to be better under low temperature conditions than the control, but worse under high temperature conditions. Aluminium toxicity is a major stress factor in many acidic soils. At soil pH levels below 5.0, intense solubilization of mononuclear A1 species strongly limits root growth by multiple cytotoxic effects mainly on root meristems (240,241). There is increasing evidence that A1 complexation with carboxylates released in apical root zones in response to elevated external Al concentration is a widespread mechanism for Al exclusion in many plant species (Fig. 10). Formation of stable Al complexes occurs with citrate, oxalate, tartarate, and—to a lesser extent— also with malate (86,242,243). The Al carboxylate complexes are less toxic than free ionic Al species (244) and are not taken up by plant roots (240). This explains the well-documented alleviatory effects on root growth in many plant species by carboxylate applications (citric, oxalic, and tartaric acids) to the culture media in presence of toxic Al concentrations (8,244,245) Citrate, malate and oxalate are the carboxylate anions reported so far to be released from Al-stressed plant roots (Fig. 10), and Al resistance of species and cultivars seems to be related to the amount of exuded carboxylates (246,247) but also to the ability to maintain the release of carboxylates over extended periods (248). In contrast to P deficiency-induced carboxylate exudation, which usually increases after several days or weeks of the stress treatment (72,113), exudation of carboxylates in response to Al toxicity is a fast reaction occurring within minutes to several hours... [Pg.71]

All application verification and soil samples must be individually labeled with unique sample identification (ID) and other identifying information such as study ID, test substance name, sample depth, replicate, subplot and date of collection, as appropriate. Proper study documentation requires that sample lists and labels be created prior to work commencing in the field. Water- and tear-resistant labels should be used since standard paper labels may become water-soaked and easily torn during sample handling. Sample lists should have the same information on them as the labels and are a convenient place to record plot randomization, initials of the individual who collected the sample, and date of collection. The cornerstone of cholera treatment is fluid replacement. Without treatment, the case-fatality rate for severe cholera is approximately 50%.
