Even if he does not do all the work himself, a true handyman is a valuable member of the laboratory staff. He is able to spot the source of a problem and suggest repair methods. He is also able to come up with better ideas for handling laboratory modification or expansion.

Flat bottom tanks are frequently placed on the ground or on concrete pads. In the case of CRM lined vessels, operating at temperatures above ambient, this can be disastrous. The uninsulated side walls of the vessel will remain substantially cooler than the bottom. The steel bottom will expand more than the cooler sidewall. This will cause the bottom to rise up, disrupting the brickwork and causing it to fail. This has happened on number of occasions. Quantitative information on the corrosion rate of steel in concrete is of great importance for the evaluation of repair methods in the laboratory, for service-life prediction and structural assessment of corroding structures as well as control of repair work on site. The only technique available today is the polarization resistance method a RILEM recommendation covering this subject has been published recently [31]. 

The decision on the repair option has to be taken starting from the extent and the cause of damage, its evolution in time, the intended use and importance of the structure and the consequences of degradation for its structural safety and serviceability (Figure 18.1). The cost of the repair methods, the availability and the experience with their use in the place where the structure is located, and the time available for repair also have to be considered. Several questions should be answered during this step, which go far beyond corrosion aspects. Table 18.1 gives an example of the most frequent questions to be considered.

To prevent any further problems in the cases where lead and copper release is the problem, it is advisable to consider the complete replacement of the tubes, fittings, fixtures and joints by corrosion-resistant components. The tube-to-tubeplate weld leaks in the PFR evaporators necessitated the development of a repair method by fitting sleeves to bypass defective welds 3000 sleeves were installed in each end of the 500 tubes of each of the three evaporators.
