Constmction and dem olition (C D) debris is a potentiahy large source of recyclables. However, as of 1995, generation rates and ferrous scrap content were not weh estabUshed and estimates were highly variable. Eerrous materials in C D debris are typicahy reinforcing bars, wire mesh, and stmctural steel. Some of the scrap is sold for recycling once concrete is effectively removed and the scrap is sized to specification (17). [Pg.553]

A process petrochemical plant producing a synthesis gas high in hydrogen experiences an explosion that results in the destruction of a 1500 cubic foot storage vessel normally held at 50 psig. Unprotected glass windows (i.e., no wire mesh reinforcing, nor tempered) in the plant area 150 feet away from the tank are broken. WTiat pressures were involved ... [Pg.501]

Traditional cold store construction was to build an insulated lining within a masonry shell. The outer skin would be erected in brick and concrete, and rendered as smooth as possible inside with cement plaster, to take the insulation. When the surface was dry, it would have several coats of bitumen applied as a vapour barrier and slabs of insulation material stuck to this with hot bitumen. This was normally carried out in two or more layers so that joints did not pass right through the insulant, but were staggered. The inner skin would be finished with cement plaster, reinforced with wire mesh. The usual insulant was slab cork. [Pg.178]

The metallic catalyst support can be in form of chips, open-mesh and reinforced wire structures, and staggered layers of metal screens or saddles. In one design, screens woven from metallic wires 0.01 to 0.03 in. diam are placed in a deep stack. In another design, metal foils 0.004 in. thick are perforated and expanded to form a screen, which is then rolled into a cylinder. See Fig. 12. [Pg.83]

Ferrous reinforcing (rebar rods and woven wire meshes). [Pg.1266]

The use of metal reinforcement embedded in the slab increases its strength. Woven wire mesh is the most common material for residential applications. For slabs on grade the Council of American Building Officials,32 One and Two Family Dwelling Code recommends 6x6 in.-W2.9 x W2.9 woven wire mesh. To help control cracking, it has been suggested that this is appropriate for a basement slab as well. [Pg.1277]

Reinforce slabs with wire mesh to help prevent large cracks and use control joints caulk the control joint. [Pg.1286]

Although FEP is available as a liquid dispersion, the commonly used material in liquid dispersion coatings are PFA and PVDF. Both materials are used in various ways such as filled or unfilled. T q)ical fillers for PFA are mica flakes. PVDF can be reinforced with fiberglass cloth or carbon fabric for additional permeation protection. T q)ical thicknesses achieved are up to 80 milli-inches (2 mm). PFA coatings are used with wire mesh reinforcment for additional protection from delamination. [Pg.295]

For electrochemical chloride extraction (abbreviated CE, also called chloride removal, or desalination), a direct current is applied between the reinforcement (cathode) and an anode that is placed temporarily on the outer surface of the concrete. The anode is an activated titanium wire mesh or a reinforcing steel mesh. The anode is surrounded by tap water or saturated calcium hydroxide solution in ponds (upper, horizontal surfaces) or tanks (vertical or overhead surfaces) or as a paste that can be sprayed onto all types of surface. Chloride ions migrate from the reinforcement to the anode. Due to a relatively high current density of 1 to 2 A/m, relatively large amounts of chloride can be removed from the concrete within a relatively short time, usually 6 to 10 weeks. After that, the anode, the electrolyte and the incorporated chloride ions are removed from the stracture. The principle layout and electrode reactions involved are indicated in Figure 20.8. [Pg.364]

Measures to control rockfall include catch fences, benches, wire mesh and rock traps. Restraining structures control landslides by increasing the resistance to movement. They include, for example, retaining walls, reinforced earth structures, shotcrete, cribs, gabions, buttresses, piling, dowels, rock bolts and rock anchors (see Chapter 9). The following minimum information is required to determine the type and size of a restraining structure ... [Pg.400]

Gunite or shotcrete frequently is used to preserve the integrity of a rock face by sealing the surface and inhibiting the action of weathering (Fig. 9.7). They are pneumatically applied mortar or concrete, respectively. Coatings may be reinforced with wire mesh and used in combination with rock bolts. Heavily fractured rocks may be grouted in order to stabilize them. [Pg.465]

Wired Glass. Flat glass that has been reinforced by the incorporation of wire mesh. One use is as a fire-stop whereas, in a fire, ordinary window panes crack, fall out and allow flames to spread, wired glass will crack but hold together. [Pg.357]

Each shortcrete layer has steel wire mesh and some strengthening rebar near the soil nail anchoring location providing the reinforcements. The whole system depends on the tension capacity of the soil nails and concrete face layers acting as a multiple span two-way slab system. Differential settlement is not a particularly sensitive issue for typical soil nail walls. [Pg.286]

Also to be considered are the specialty mortars derived from the acid-resistant cements. These mortars can be applied to steel or concrete to provide remarkable acid, alkali, and heat resistance. They may be reinforced with wire mesh to sustain the heavy thicknesses normally applied. Coefficients of expansion close to that of steel have been attained to resolve one of the major problems when applying inorganic materials on steel. These can be used as floors, tank interiors, in scrubbers, and other process equipment of clean interior design. [Pg.625]

One of the methods is to use shotcreting on the faces of masonry infills which can increase the stiffness and the lateral load capacity of the infilled frame and reduce the lateral drift at the ultimate load. Calvi and Bolognini (2001) have performed full-scale tests in which they have placed a 10 mm plaster on both sides of a masonry infill wall covering either reinforcement (05 mm or 06 mm) or wire meshes and have studied the behavior of the strengthened infilled frame. Based on their observations from the experiments, the introduction of some reinforcement in the mortar layers, with a geometrical percentage lower than 1 %, will almost double the acceleration levels for the occupational and damage limit states. [Pg.163]
