There are so many gas treating processes that one hardly knows where to begin. That makes selection of a process for a given situation difficult. Economics will ultimately decide, but some initial rough screening is required to eliminate inordinate study. I have attempted to condense the mass of information in the literature into some brief, user-friendly guidelines for the rough cut. 

A rough screen to remove large items such as tree limbs, tin cans, and bones will be installed near the intake. A sand filter63 will be the only large piece of equipment needed for the cooling water. 

The information in Table I and these surveys should be used only as a rough screening tool for very preliminary studies. Specific applications should be discussed with the licensors or builders of such systems.

Limitations of time and facilities, however, usually restrict the study to grades that offer greater promise. Usually, it will suffice to outline the general objective that is, whether the treatment is to correct odor, color, colloids, or other characteristics that can be broadly defined. If and when the molecular size of the contamination is known, information on the pore size distribution of a carbon can be helpful and this can be furnished by the carbon supplier. 

In view of McWhirter and Pike s work, noise will limit the number of cumulants that we can actually measure. In most cases, only (E) and p.2 t)c determined. Cumulants are used for monomodal size distributions that have a PI not larger than 0.3. In bimodals or other more complex distributions, cumulant analysis will be meaningless and will only give some type of rough screening of the data. Even more, T>app( )> which is what is usually determined, is also dependent on the type of correlator, whether linear or nonlinear correlator, and the number of channels used [55].
