Corrosion Resistant Fiber-Reinforced Plastic (FRP). Fiber glass reinforcement bonded with furfuryl alcohol thermosetting resias provides plastics with unique properties. Excellent resistance to corrosion and heat distortion coupled with low flame spread and low smoke emission are characteristics that make them valuable as laminating resins with fiber glass (75,76). Another valuable property of furan FRP is its strength at elevated temperature. Hand-layup, spray-up, and filament-win ding techniques are employed to produce an array of corrosion-resistant equipment, pipes, tanks, vats, ducts, scmbbers, stacks, and reaction vessels for industrial appHcations throughout the world. [Pg.81]

Spray-up Popular system with reinforced plastic production. An air spray gun includes a roller cutter that chops usually glass fiber rovings to a controlled short length before being blown in a random pattern (manually or automatically) onto a surface of the mold simultaneously the gun sprays catalyzed TS polyester plastic. The chopped fibers are plastic coated as they exit the gun s nozzle. The resulting, rather fluffy, RP mass is consolidated with serrated rollers to squeeze out air and reduce or eliminate voids. The resin matrix can be either thermosetting or thermoplastic. Thermosetting resins such as epoxy, polyimide, polyester, and phenolic are used in applications where physical properties are important. Polyester and epoxy composites make up the bulk of the thermoset composite market. Of these two, polyesters dominate by far. Reinforced with glass fiber, these are known as fiberglass-reinforced plastics (FRPs). Corporation (Golden, CO). The reactor, 1.22m wide by 2.44 m, consisted of a fiberglass-reinforced plastic I-beam frame. A transparent fluoropolymer film, treated to accept adhesives, formed the front and back windows of the reactor. The Ti02 was suspended in water as a slurry and sprayed onto the tubular supports with a new paint sprayer until the supports were opaque. Fluid modeling of airflow flnough the reactor showed that a 5.1 cm PVC manifold, located at the inlet and outlet of flie reactor, would provide an even flow distribution. Small (0.6 cm) holes, drilled into flie manifold at one inch intervals, provided the even flow distribution required for efficient contact of the contaminated air with the catalyst. [Pg.1561]

Other polyester products include flag poles, doors, waste bins, ski rack enclosures, ski poles, fish hatchery basins, water slides and storage vessels. An alternative to rubber linings which suit corrosive environments are glass flake reinforced plastics. They combine impact, erosion and abrasion resistance and can be applied on site using a spray or brush. They are compounds of glass flakes with various corrosion resistant thermosetting resins combined in different ratios. Vacuum molding n. This type of molding is used to mold fiberglass-reinforced plastics. The method allows molding without high temperatures and pressures. In this technique, layers of reinforced media are applied to the mold by hand. Resin is either sprayed or brushed on after each layer is positioned. The flexible sheet (usually cellophane or polyvinyl acetate) is placed over the lay up. Joints and seals are sealed and a vacuum causes the b to collapse over the face of the product not contacting the mold.
