Composites construction

Adhesives may be used to bond precast concrete slab units directly to the flanges of longitudinal steel girders in bridge construction. Such a technique has been successfully employed in Germany(12). On one bridge described in Chapter 7, epoxy resins were used in a variety of forms and locations on the superstructure. The successful use of resins in this example suggests considerable scope for other applications. [Pg.279]

The U values of many partitions or composite constructions can be found in standard references but others may have to be calculated where no data are available or changes are contemplated. The resistivity r) of each element of the partition encountered by the heat in passing through must be found and multiplied by the thickness in meters. Manufacturers are usually able to give resistivities. The sum R total) of all the elements, including the inner and outer surface resistances and the resistance... [Pg.442]

The latter issue was addressed more recently by Hamilton et al. who developed a trilayer composite consisting of CPP, articular cartilage (CEP), and NP tissue [125]. By sequential seeding of chondrocytes onto the CPP surface followed 2 weeks later by seeding NP cells onto the matrix produced by the chondrocytes, the authors were able to form a tissue composite construct. Although it appeared that the NP cells were able to maintain a rounded morphology, the interfacial shear load required to... [Pg.221]

Hollow-tiber membranes are subjected lo extensile studies lor gaseous separation (e.g.. CO-. 11-. CL. Ny. 1LS. CO. CH4). where the capillary configuration has an advantage over the spiral-wound fiat Hint and plate und-lramc devices. Another significant area of development and commercialization is pervaporation. These membranes are dense, rather than porous. structures. Generally asymmetric composite constructions arc employed with the ulirathin membranes on an open support. [Pg.780]

Engineering thermoplastics have also been used in preimpregnated constructions. The thermoplastic is thoroughly dispersed as a continuous phase in glass, other resins, carbon fibers (qv), or other reinforcement. Articles can be produced from these constructions using thermoforming techniques. For example, the aerospace industry uses polyetheretherketone (PEEK) in woven carbon-fiber tapes (26). Experimental uses of other composite constructions have been reported (27) (see also COMPOSITE MATERIALS, POLYMER-MATRIX). [Pg.263]

We discerned three kinds of refunctionalization unit reactions which can usefully couple with a construction in a nonstop, or one-step, procedure prior reduction to carbanion nucleophiles, elimination following construction, or various tautomerizations before or after construction. The overall net structural changes for these composite constructions were then added to our list of construction half-reactions and, after some further subdivision of common types into chemically recognizable subheadings, we had expanded the list from the six of Figure 4 to 24 half-reactions ... [Pg.73]

If everyone liked the same thing we would have run out of it, whatever it was, long ago. So it is with textile polymers. There are an almost infinite number of end uses, each of which demands a particular combination of fiber/yarn/fabric/composite-construction properties, but one of the most common features of textile polymer products is that they are all orthotropic, i.e., they have elastic properties with considerable variation of strength in two directions perpendicular to one another. This element of elasticity has a profound impact on fiber toughness and also on the time dependent properties of the polymer product. [Pg.454]

ASTM El537 [142] and ASTM El590 [143] test upholstered chairs and beds in an instrumented test room. Rate of heat release, smoke and carbon monoxide, and mass loss limits are specified for these full-scale product tests carried out for furniture for high-risk public area usage. These tests actually assess the fire performance of a composite construction. including design effects in a simulated end use situation, and are based on the California State tests. [Pg.690]

Light is transmitted from one end of an optical fiber to the other by total internal reflection (TIR) as illustrated in Figure 32.15. Modern optical fibers use a composite construction with a core of refractive index rii and a cladding with a lower refractive index, Hi, such that ( i - tii) is typically in the range of 0.005-0.05. Light will remain in the fiber when the critical angle of incidence, is met or exceeded. To determine L we make use of Snell s law (which can be derived from Maxwell s equations) ... [Pg.586]

The susceptibihty of resins, reinforcing fibres and composites to aqueous and non-aqueous environments has been reviewed. It is clear that with careful material selection and composite construction, reinforced plastics are very durable in aggressive conditions. One of the most severe environments, aqueous acids, can be designed to use the ideas presented here. This practice is implemented in industry, as demonstrated by the durability of GRP in environments encountered in chemical plant and conduit for corrosive effluents. [Pg.108]

The blade has a true composite construction, as shown in Figure 8.27, with areas of unidirectional glass and carbon fibre, woven glass cloth trailing edge skins laid at 45 over a polyaramid paper honeycomb core, and a titanium erosion shield. The polymeric matrix for the fibres is epo) resin. The metal blades that it replaces were retired after 9400 hours in service, whereas the composite blades do not need replacement during the 40000 hour life of the airframe. Safety is improved, and overall running costs reduced. [Pg.414]

The possibilities for making bonded structural sandwich elements in a variety of materials are very real. However, whilst there exist structural examples such as aluminium honeycomb panels (used in aircraft and transport applications) and metal skinned foam sandwich panels (used as the monocoque chassis in refrigerated transport applications), these composite constructions are normally utilised in non- or semi-structural ways. Typical skin materials are steel, aluminium, GRP and plywood, and common core materials are rigid foam polystyrene, polyurethane, polyisocyanurate, PVC, and honeycombed aluminium. In some instances the foam core is injected between the skins and adheres to them in others, adhesives are used to bond the separate components together. The nature of the manufaeturing process depends on the type of structure to be made, and the degree of investment in produetion maehinery. Both flat and eomplex eurved forms ean be made by a hand lay-up process as well as in an automated way. [Pg.277]
