Regular Fire Drills

Fire drills verify the organization s readiness to handle a fire emergency effectively. The entire facility should be involved, using unannounced drills. The drills may be done by department or section. Management members should have specific responsibilities and be required to carry them out during an emergency as well as during the drill. Evacuation routes and exits should be posted in each work location.

Every employee must be instructed in the means of escape available and shown the different escape routes. Fire assembly points must be shown to them and the need to report to fire marshalls explained to them. Ideally this instruction should be part of induction training. Regular fire drills should be carried out to make employees familiar with escape routes and assembly procedures. 

Step 3 Identify the people who could start fires deliberately intruders, visitors and members of staff. Also consider the people that will be affected, especially anyone with a disability All staff should receive appropriate training so as to be aware of the danger of arson and the threat that it presents to life and jobs. Everyone should take part in regular fire drills and be aware of the need to assist people with any form of disability. 

Fire training should be accompanied by practices, including regular fire drills and evacuation procedures. No exceptions for senior management should be permitted during these. Evacuation drills on large projects have been found to improve the response time dramatically in subsequent real emergencies. 

A written procedure for fire control measures should be in place, including prevention of fire, fire detection measures and fire drills. Fire detection and fire-fighting equipment should be serviced regularly. Smoking should not be permitted in the storage areas. 

It is the responsibility of the school to have an evacuation plan in place in case of fire. The plan should be in writing, and training on the plan should be provided regularly to faculty and staff. Interaction with local fire department personnel is critical in successful operations during emergencies. Local or state laws will dictate how often the drills should occur and when in the school year they should be held. All equipment should be regularly serviced and tested so as to be sure that it will function properly in an emergency. It is furthermore advisable to set up a works fire brigade, to train members of the personnel in firefighting and to organize fire drill at regular intervals. 

For each German NPP a professional fire brigade on the plant site is required. The members of the plant fire brigade as well as the members of the intervention team Jire well trained on a periodic basis. These training courses are carried out on the plant site and in special facilities for fire fighting experience. The scheduled fire drills take place regularly. 

A responsible person must establish a procedure for dealing with a fire including regular fire response exercises and drills. The procedure should identify the circumstances that trigger the emergency. Who and how the evacuation should take place and when people should be allowed to return to the workplace [15(2)(a), (b) and (c)]. 

Example Specific site induction must include the local emergency evacuation procedure, and understanding may need to be confirmed by holding regular practice fire drills. 

In addition to all this, plant personnel need regular training in fire drill. It is good practice to issue a pocket card giving the basic actions in the case of fire and other emergencies. Fire and first aid teams should be trained in any special procedures relevant to the new plant or process and should become familiar with the treatment procedures to be followed after exposure to the chemicals used in the process.

While every care is taken to prevent the occurrence of unfortunate incidents such as fire, accidents do happen. In such a situation, the work personnel may become panicky, thus aggravating the case. This can certainly be avoided if the personnel concerned are properly trained in the use of fire fighting equipment and safety appliances and suits being purchased by carrying out regular drills.
