Exit routes and doors from all facilities should be provided according to the requirements of NFPA 101. The minimum width of all exit routes should not be less than a standardized width, 1.0 meter (39 inches) being commonly adopted. Where low occupancy rooms are provided in offshore facilities near process areas, a secondary emergency escape hatch is provided as an alternative means of escape in addition to the normal means of egress. [Pg.198]

Incidental combustible liquid storage (e g., lube oil reservoirs, fuel day tanks, etc.) should normally not be installed within 1.8 meters (6 ft.) of an emergency exit route, especially if it is the only means of egress from an enclosure. [Pg.198]

Wet or dry chemical fixed suppression systems are typically provided over the kitchen cooking appliances and in exhaust plenums and ducts. Activation means is afforded by fusible links located in the exhaust ducts/plenums usually rated at 232°C (450°F). Manual activation means should not be provided near the cooking area, but in the exit routes from the facility. The facility fire alarm should sound upon activation of the fixed suppression system and power or gas to the cooking appliances should be automatically shut off. The ventilation system should also be shut down by the activation of the fire alarm system. Emergency planning includes tornado and storm shelters, flood protection, earthquakes, proximity to public areas, and safe exit routes. It also includes planning for the effect that an emergency in the new process would have on other plants, and the effect that an emergency in another plant would have on the new process. The effects of potential spills on waterways and aquifers should be considered. [Pg.85]

Air locks and pass-throughs are bidirectional and can be used for movement in either direction. When used as an exit route, the decontamination procedure can be omitted.
