Fire drills

Managers and employees both participate in the regnlar fire drills and may be members of the same fire team. Firefighting training reqnired by the safety system is also a good opportunity for team building between employees and managers at all levels.

Fire drills are very much in order in most laboratories. When the signal is given, all workers should shut down their equipment and leave in a quick and orderly manner. Some employees may be assigned to fire extinguishers or other fire fighting equipment. The speed with which this is accomplished is important and may be timed wdth a stopwatch. After the drill, a supervisor may want to check on how well the equipment was secured... 

As well as the obvious risks, there can be less obvious risks too. Heart pacemakers can be disrupted by strong magnetic fields so this needs to be pointed out to anyone who enters the area in case they are reliant on one. Another risk is for people who have certain metal prosthetics (e.g., hip joints) - you wouldn t want them stuck to the side of the magnet, would you Another example that we have had is with metal breathing apparatus - someone was pulled back to the magnet when wearing it during a fire drill. 

Cancer is an unwelcome, potentially life-threatening diagnosis that one-third of us will experience. The oldest descriptions of cancer date back to Egypt around 1600 BC. The so-called Edwin Smith Papyrus describes eight cases of what appears to be breast cancer. The tumors of the breast were treated by cauterization, with a tool called the fire drill . Clearly there was a desire and need to treat this dreaded disease, but the conclusion was There is no treatment . It is only in the last 100 years that we have developed more sophisticated tools to treat cancer. 

If there is an actual bomb threat, carry out the following procedures First, evacuate the premises. Do not fall into fire drill routines remember, you are vacating to avoid injury stemming from premeditated violence. Leave the building immediately. Take nothing with you. Do not shut down electrical equipment. Keep movement to a minimum. If there are visitors or persons with special needs in the building, make certain they are evacuated. 

Proceed to the area away from the building designated in the fire drill policy. Do not enter vehicles parked nearby. Take attendance. Make mental notes about any missing personnel or any questionable activity in or near the building. If you received the actual threat, record as much information as possible gender,... 

Know fire-drill procedures and the locations of exits. 

A written procedure for fire control measures should be in place, including prevention of fire, fire detection measures and fire drills. Fire detection and fire-fighting equipment should be serviced regularly. Smoking should not be permitted in the storage areas. 

Fire Evacuation Drills - All building occupants must be familiar with what they should do during an evacuation. The most effective method of familiarizing them is to hold a fire drill at least annually. Holding a fire drill has other advantages, as well. It will provide you with an opportunity to evaluate your notification and evacuation procedures, and it will give you an opportunity to test your fire alarm system and make occupants aware of the sound. 

Although the fire drills should be unannounced, you may need to give advanced notice to key personnel in your building.

A fire code (NFPA 101) developed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) for the preservation of life from a fire event or its associated hazards. It is primarily concerned with exit facilities and arrangements and protection against fire events. As a result of the large life loss of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire in New York in 1911, the NFPA was challenged to provide life safety measures for factories and loft buildings, control of smoking in hazardous areas, improved exits, and provision of fire drills. NFPA 101, Life Safety Code, is the standard that is used to delineate the appropriate fire exit requirements. 

There was also a high level of accountability socialized into the location. For example, unlike the typical fire drills in civilian workplaces where some coworkers stay at their desks or wander off, each reporting unit ensured that everyone exited the building and was accounted for after drills. In fact, people walked around during the drill to ensure that those at their desks heard the alarm and evacuated appropriately.

Every employee must be instructed in the means of escape available and shown the different escape routes. Fire assembly points must be shown to them and the need to report to fire marshalls explained to them. Ideally this instruction should be part of induction training. Regular fire drills should be carried out to make employees familiar with escape routes and assembly procedures. 

Access a copy of the fire response plan for an office building, and comment on its adequacy. If you can, find out the frequency with which fire drills are conducted.
