Practical separation techniques for hquid particles in gases are discussed. Since gas-borne particulates include both hquid and sohd particles, many devices used for dry-dust collection (discussed in Sec. 17 under Gas-Sohds Separation ) can be adapted to liquid-particle separation. Also, the basic subject of particle mechanics is covered in Sec. 6. Separation of liquid particulates is frequently desirable in chemical processes such as in countercurrent-stage contacting because hquid entrainment with the gas partially reduces true countercurrency. Separation before entering another process step may be needed to prevent corrosion, to prevent yield loss, or to prevent equipment damage or malfunc tion. Separation before the atmospheric release of gases may be necessaiy to prevent environmental problems and for regula-toiy compliance. [Pg.1427]

Prevention of Significant Deterioration (PSD) Of aU the federal laws placing environmental controls on industiy (and, in particular, on new plants), perhaps the most confusing and restrictive are the limits imposed for the prevention of significant deterioration (PSD) of air quahty. These limits apply to areas of the countiy that are already cleaner than required by ambient air-quality standards. This regula-toiy framework evolved from judicial and administrative ac tion under the 1970 Clean Air Act and subsequently was given full statutoiy foundation by the 1977 Clean Air Act Amendments. [Pg.2155]

To achieve these objectives, RCRA authorized EPA to regulate the generation, treatment, storage, transportation, and dispos of hazardous wastes. The structure of the national hazardous waste regula-toiy program envisioned by Congress is laid out in Subtitle C of RCRA (Sections 3001 through 3019), vdiich authorized EPA to ... [Pg.2162]

As discussed previously, industiy is beginning to realize that there are profound benefits associated with pollution prevention including cost effectiveness, reduced hability, enhanced public image, and regula-toiy compliance. Nevertheless, there are barriers or disincentives identifiea with pollution prevention. This section will briefly outline both barriers and incentives that may need to be confronted or considered during the evaluation of a pollution prevention program. [Pg.2168]

Public concerns about air quality led to the passage of the Clean Air Act in 1970 to amendments to that act in 1977 and 1990. The 1990 amendments contained seven separate titles covering different regula-toiy programs and include requirements to install more advanced pollution control equipment and make other changes in industrial operations to reduce emissions of air pollutants. The 1990 amendments address sulfur dioxide emissions and acid rain deposition, nitrous oxide emissions, ground-level ozone, carbon monoxide emissions, particulate emissions, tail pipe emissions, evaporative emissions, reformulated gasoline, clean-fueled vehicles and fleets, hazardous air pollutants, solid waste incineration, and accidental chemical releases. [Pg.478]

Because of round off errors, the Regula Falsa method should include a check for excessive iterations. A modified Regula Falsa method is based on the use of a relaxation factor, i.e., a number used to alter the results of one iteration before inserting into the next. Eq. (18) is now a function of temperature only. It can be solved by any trial and error procedure such as successive substitution or regula falsi (Gerald (1978)). Having obtained the optimum temperature from Eq. (18), the corresponding minimum time can be calculated from Eq. (17). [Pg.325]

Quasi-Newton methods start out by using two points xP and jfl spanning the interval of jc, points at which the first derivatives of fix) are of opposite sign. The zero of Equation (5.9) is predicted by Equation (5.10), and the derivative of the function is then evaluated at the new point. The two points retained for the next step are jc and either xP or xP. This choice is made so that the pair of derivatives / ( ), and either/ (jc ) or/ ( ), have opposite signs to maintain the bracket on jc. This variation is called regula falsi or the method of false position. In Figure 5.3, for the (k + l)st search, x and xP would be selected as the end points of the secant line. [Pg.161]

Also located in the control room is the manual-automatic switching hardware (or software). During start-up or under abnormal conditions, the plant operator may want to be able to set the position of the control valve himself instead of having the controller position it.
