Hybrid Crystallization/Adsorption Process. In 1994, IFP and Chevron announced the development of a hybrid process that reportedly combines the best features of adsorption and crystallization (59,99). In this option of the Eluxyl process, the adsorbent bed is used to initially produce PX of 90—95% purity. The PX product from the adsorption section is then further purified in a small single-stage crystallizer and the filtrate is recycled back to the adsorption section. It is reported that ultrahigh (99.9+%) purity PX can be produced easily and economically with this scheme for both retrofits of existing crystallization units as well as grass-roots units. A demonstration plant was built at Chevron s Pascagoula refinery in 1994. [Pg.420]

Partial Oxidation. It is often desirable to augment the supply of naturally occurring or by-product gaseous fuels or to produce gaseous fuels of well-defined composition and combustion characteristics (5). This is particularly tme in areas where the refinery fuel (natural gas) is in poor supply and/or where the manufacture of fuel gases, originally from coal and more recently from petroleum, has become well estabHshed. [Pg.74]

Used oil disposal trends include waste minimisation such as by reclaiming used fluid on site, as well as recycling of mineral oil lubricants instead of disposing by incineration. The recycling effort involves a system where spent mineral oils are collected then shipped to specialty refineries where the materials are distilled, hydrofinished, and re-refined into fresh base stocks. These re-refined materials are virtually identical to virgin feedstocks. [Pg.267]

As indicated in Table 4, large-scale recovery of natural gas Hquid (NGL) occurs in relatively few countries. This recovery is almost always associated with the production of ethylene (qv) by thermal cracking. Some propane also is used for cracking, but most of it is used as LPG, which usually contains butanes as well. Propane and ethane also are produced in significant amounts as by-products, along with methane, in various refinery processes, eg, catalytic cracking, cmde distillation, etc (see Petroleum). They either are burned as refinery fuel or are processed to produce LPG and/or cracking feedstock for ethylene production. [Pg.400]

Butene. Commercial production of 1-butene, as well as the manufacture of other linear a-olefins with even carbon atom numbers, is based on the ethylene oligomerization reaction. The reaction can be catalyzed by triethyl aluminum at 180—280°C and 15—30 MPa ( 150 300 atm) pressure (6) or by nickel-based catalysts at 80—120°C and 7—15 MPa pressure (7—9). Another commercially developed method includes ethylene dimerization with the Ziegler dimerization catalysts, (OR) —AIR, where R represents small alkyl groups (10). In addition, several processes are used to manufacture 1-butene from mixed butylene streams in refineries (11) (see BuTYLENEs). [Pg.425]

Desalting is a water-washing operation performed at the production field and at the refinery site for additional cmde oil cleanup. If the petroleum from the separators contains water and dirt, water washing can remove much of the water-soluble minerals and entrained soflds. If these cmde oil contaminants are not removed, they can cause operating problems duting refinery processiag, such as equipment plugging and corrosion as well as catalyst deactivation. [Pg.201]

A common form of turbine pump is the vertical pump, which has the pump element mounted at the bottom of a column that serves as the discharge pipe (see Fig. 10-46). Such units are immersed in the liquid to be pumped and are commonly used for wells, condenser circulating water, large-volume drainage, etc. Another form of the pump has a shell surrounding the pumping element which is connected to the intake pipe. In this form, the pump is used on condensate service in power plants and for process work in oil refineries. [Pg.909]

A modem petroleum refinery is a complex system of chemical and physical operations. The cmde oil is first separated by distillahon into fractions such as gasoline, kerosene, and fuel oil. Some of the distillate fractions are converted to more valuable products by cracking, polymerization, or reforming. The products are treated to remove undesirable components, such as sulfur, and then blended to meet the final product specifications. A detailed analysis of the entire petroleum production process, including emissions and controls, is obviously well beyond the scope of this text. [Pg.518]

Wastewater Deep Well Injection. This is an alternate wastewater disposal procedure and requires some treating prior to injection, such as filtration or pFI adjustment. The catalytic cracking processes, as well as most other refinery catalytic processes, produce coke which collects on the catalyst surface and diminishes its catalytic properties. The catalyst, therefore, needs to be regenerated continuously or periodically essentially by burning the coke off the catalyst at high temperatures. [Pg.88]

A combination unit is a special type of unit that was developed to reduce the investment for a small refinery. In effect, one main distillation unit serves as a crude fi-actionator as well as the cat unit primary fractionator. This same tower also serves the naphtha reformer and visbreaker. A schematic diagram of a combination unit is shown in Figure 2. Crude oil is topped (material boiling below 650°F is removed) in the atmospheric tower, and the topped crude is sent to the combination tower along with cat products and naphtha reformer products. These latter streams provide heat to distill the topped crude and also, being more volatile than topped crude, provide a lifting effect which assists in vaporizing more of the crude. [Pg.21]
