Vertical pumps

Axial-Plow Propeller-Type. For high capacity, single-stage propeller-type vertical pumps are used. One appHcation of this design is as an intake of cooling water from a river or a hoi ding basin via a pipeline. 

On vertical pumps, the correction should he made to the eye of the suction impeller. 

Vertical Pumps In the chemical industiy, the term vertical process pump (Fig. 10-40) generally applies to a pump with a vertical shaft having a length from drive end to impeller of approximately 1 m (3.1 ft) minimum to 20 m (66 ft) or more. Vertical pumps are used as either wet-pit pumps (immersed) or dry-pit pumps (externally mounted) in conjunction with stationaiy or mobile tanlcj... 

Sump Pumps These are small single-stage vertical pumps used to drain shahowpits or sumps. They are of the same general construction as vertical process pumps but are not designed for severe operating conditions. 

A common form of turbine pump is the vertical pump, which has the pump element mounted at the bottom of a column that serves as the discharge pipe (see Fig. 10-46). Such units are immersed in the liquid to be pumped and are commonly used for wells, condenser circulating water, large-volume drainage, etc. Another form of the pump has a shell surrounding the pumping element which is connected to the intake pipe. In this form, the pump is used on condensate service in power plants and for process work in oil refineries. 

Vertical pumps experience a vortex formation due to loss of submergence required by the pump. Observe the suction surface while the pump is in operation, if possible. 

Figure 10-123 shows a typical power consumption in thrust bearings as a function of unit speed. Tne total power loss is usually about 0.8-10 percent of the total rate power of the unit. New vector lube bearings reduce the horsepower loss by as much as 30 percent. In large vertical pumps, thrust bearings take not only the load caused by... 

Labyrinth seals work best when the pump is running. Centrifugal force favors the labyrinth seal s action. Earlier models were only specified for horizontal pump shafts. Later models are designed for both horizontal and vertical pump shafts and effectively perform their function whether the pump is running or off... 

By dynamically balancing most parts, seal life and bearing life is greatly improved, even on smaller equipment. Dynamic balancing is needed on pump impellers, as the practice of static balance is woefully inadequate. Vertical pumps must be dynamically balanced the long, slender shafts are highly susceptible to any unbalanced-induced vibration.

Many applications can be handled either by a horizontal or a vertical pump. In the range usually associated w ith process plants and the associated sendees. Tables 3-5 and 3-6 are helpful guides in making the selection [12]. 

A suction bell on the inlet of a vertical pump (or the inlet pipe of the suction side of a horizontal pump) is not necessary as far as pump or sump operation is concerned. If a bell is omitted, the entrance losses due to flow will be higher ith only a straight pipe, and this must be considered in pump operation. An economic comparison vsill help decide the value of the bell. Strainers should not be placed on suction bells unless this is the only arrangement. Inlet water should be screened with trash racks, bars and screens to keep the sump free of debris.

In applications, centrifugal pumps can be supplied with liquid via piping, or the pump may be submerged. Vertical pumps are called dry-pit or wet-pit types. The wet-pit pump (submerged) discharges up through a pipe system to some point above the pump. 

Bevel gears are used most frequently for 90° drives, but other angles can be accommodated. The most typical application is driving a vertical pump with a horizontal driver.

Important to any aquifer restoration program is the radius of influence or capture zone to be anticipated during pumping. The radius of influence (rQ) for a vertical pumping well can be calculated using the following equation.

Unless otherwise specified, motors for vertical pumps shall have solid shafts. When the pump thrust bearings are in the motor, the motors shall meet the shaft and base tolerances shown in Figure 3-1. 

On vertical pumps equipped with mechanical seals, the coupling shall be a spacer type. The spacer shall be of snfficient length to permit replacement of the seal assembly, inclnding the sleeve, without removal of the driver. 

Internal bearings in vertical pumps are normally lubricated by the hquid pumped. Alternate methods of lubrication shall be proposed when the pumped liquid is not suitable. 

Single casing vertical pumps shall have the manufacturer s standard moxmting arrangement.
