Redundancy, eliminating

The advice here is simple Use of double negatives is unnecessary and redundant. Eliminate it from your writing. [Pg.115]

Useless code elimination The compiler may discover that some part of the source code is useless—either it cannot execute or its results are never used. In this case, the compiler can eliminate the useless operations. This may make the resulting code faster (because it no longer executes the operations). The resulting code should also be smaller. The presence of other transformations, such as constant propagation, inline substitution, and redundancy elimination, can create useless code. [Pg.17]

Figure 2.54 shows the application of an MOE and CCF for an example system. In this example, the event XI—Power Supply Fails is the common fault that causes loss of components Al, A2, B, and C. Since CCF primarily applies to redundancy elimination, XI is both a CCF and MOE for causing loss of Al... [Pg.263]

Redundant, isomorphic structures have to be eliminated by the computer before it produces a result. The determination of whether structures are isomorphic or not stems from a mathematical operation called permutation the structures are isomorphic if they can be interconverted by permutation (Eq. (6) see Section 2.8.7). The permutation P3 is identical to P2 if a mathematical operation (P ) is applied. This procedure is described in the example using atom 4 of P3 (compare Figure 2-40, third line). In permutation P3 atom 4 takes the place of atom 5 of the reference structure but place 5 in P2. To replace atom 4 in P2 at position 5, both have to be interchanged, which is expressed by writing the number 4 at the position of 5 in P. Applying this to all the other substituents, the result is a new permutation P which is identical to P]. [Pg.58]

The most effective specification is that which accomplishes the desired result with the fewest requirements. Properties and performance should be emphasized rather than how the objectives ate to be achieved. Excessive demonstration of emdition on the part of the writer or failure to recognize the usually considerable processing expertise held by the vendor results in a lengthy and overly detailed document that generally is counterproductive. Redundancy may lead to technical inconsistency. A requirement that cannot be assessed by a prescribed test method or quantitative inspection technique never should be included in the specifications. Wherever possible, tests should be easy to perform and highly correctable with service performance. Tests that indicate service life are especially useful. Standard test references, eg, ASTM methods, ate the most desirable, and those that ate needed should be selected carefully and the numbers of such references should be minimized. To eliminate unnecessary review activity by the would-be complier, the description of a standard test should not be paraphrased or condensed unless the original test is referenced. [Pg.21]

The safety improvements use redundancy and diversity to prevent and mitigate lents. The safety injection system (SIS) and emergency feedwater system (EFWS) are dedicated four train systems. Containment spray and safety injection pumps take water from the in-containment water storage tank (IRWST), thus, eliminating the need to switch from an external source and provide a. semi-closed system with continuous recirculation. Emergency core coolant flows direc nto the... [Pg.217]

This table gives the displacements for the normal mode corresponding to the imaginary frequency in terms of redundant internal coordinates (several zero-valued coordinates have been eliminated). The most significant values in this list are for the dihedral angles D1 through D6. When we examine the standard orientation, we realize that such motion corresponds to a rotation of the methyl group. [Pg.74]

Arrangements in which the sets of x contiguous lattice cells chosen for occupation by polymer molecules are identical but which differ only in the permutation of the polymer molecules over these sets would be counted as different in this enumeration scheme. Since the polymer molecules actually are identical, it is appropriate to eliminate this redundancy. We require merely the number Q. of ways in which ri2 sets of X consecutively adjacent cells may be chosen from the lattice the order in which the sets are filled by polymer molecules is immaterial. Since U2 differentiable polymer molecules (labeled, for example, in the order of their insertion into the lattice) could be assigned to a given arrangement of U2 sets of sites in ri2 different ways, it follows that... [Pg.500]

Context-dependent situations often lead to a large-scale input dimension. Because the required number of training examples increases with the number of measured variables or features, reducing the input dimensionality may improve system performance. In addition, decision discriminants will be less complex (because of fewer dimensions in the data) and more easily determined. The reduction in dimensionality can be most readily achieved by eliminating redundancy in the data so that only the most relevant features are used for mapping to a given set of labels. [Pg.7]

Filters are designed to remove unwanted information, but do not address the fact that processes involve few events monitored by many measurements. Many chemical processes are well instrumented and are capable of producing many process measurements. However, there are far fewer independent physical phenomena occurring than there are measured variables. This means that many of the process variables must be highly correlated because they are reflections of a limited number of physical events. Eliminating this redundancy in the measured variables decreases the contribution of noise and reduces the dimensionality of the data. Model robustness and predictive performance also require that the dimensionality of the data be reduced. [Pg.24]

In Section 1.5 we briefly discussed the relationships of equality and inequality constraints in the context of independent and dependent variables. Normally in design and control calculations, it is important to eliminate redundant information and equations before any calculations are performed. Modem multivariable optimization software, however, does not require that the user clearly identify independent, dependent, or superfluous variables, or active or redundant constraints. If the number of independent equations is larger than the number of decision variables, the software informs you that no solution exists because the problem is overspecified. Current codes have incorporated diagnostic tools that permit the user to include all possible variables and constraints in the original problem formulation so that you do not necessarily have to eliminate constraints and variables prior to using the software. Keep in mind, however, that the smaller the dimensionality of the problem introduced into the software, the less time it takes to solve the problem. [Pg.66]

You can see that the model for a realistic process can become extremely complex what is important to remember is that steps 1 and 3 in Table 1.1 provide an organized framework for identifying all of the variables and formulating the objective function, equality constraints, and inequality constraints. After this is done, you need not eliminate redundant variables or equations. The computer software can usually handle redundant relations (but not inconsistent ones). [Pg.73]

A data reconciliation procedure was applied to the subset of redundant equations. The results are displayed in Table 4. A global test for gross error detection was also applied and the x2 value was found to be equal to 17.58, indicating the presence of a gross error in the data set. Using the serial elimination procedure described in Chapter 7, a gross error was identified in the measurement of stream 26. The procedure for estimating the amount of bias was then applied and the amount of bias was found... [Pg.251]

The braced frame must develop the ultimate capacity of the members which it supports, namely the girts and end wall columns. The force applied to the top of the column is equal to the tributary area times the resistance as a static load. Each braced frame will be designed to resist the entire load even though there will be a frame at each end of the building. This will provide redundancy and will eliminate large axial forces in the top perimeter beams at the interior frames. [Pg.117]

These redundancies should not be present in SWISS-PROT or TrEMBL thus it was necessary to find methods to manipulate the data from redundant source databases to meet the stringent standards of minimal redundancy. The objective was to recognize and eliminate the redundancy already present in the databases and to prevent further redundancy entering the database. [Pg.55]

The redundancy removal based on the CRC32 matching eliminated the most obvious redundancy from TrEMBL. However tens of thousands of cases of potential (not easily detectable) redundancy, still need to be eliminated ... [Pg.56]

Even this brief list may suffice to show that it would be a formidable task to develop a system of factorization free of avoidable redundancies, and that such a system would not be satisfactory even if it avoids arbitrary choices. It would require a rule disqualifying certain centers or lines of stereoisomerism on the basis of their relationships to other potential elements in the same molecule. Such definitions would not be self-contained. Moreover, the products of factorization that would take the place of those dropped cannot be limited to points or lines that are merely differently defined. There would have to be a virtually open-ended proliferation of new elements. This highly undesirable feature would not be offset by a major benefit of the revised system such as a correlation between the numbers of elements and of stereoisomers, because a complete elimination of all redundancies does not seem possible. We conclude that the system of choice is the one based on the principle that the elements of stereoisomerism allow no further factoring. Accordingly we think it best to retain the definitions given in Sects. IV and VI and their strictures that all centers and lines be occupied by atoms or bonds. [Pg.217]

It can also be used to exchange information needed for other submissions, such as drug listing, thus eliminating redundant data collection and improving efficiency. [Pg.482]

Note Although not being correct to describe a reaction, the term ortho effect is well established, and another occasionally used term, retro-1,4-addition, is redundant 1,4-elimination would describe the same. Unfortunately, this might be confused with l,4-H20-eliminations from aliphatic alcohols, for example. Therefore, the term ortho elimination is suggested and used here. [Pg.304]

The goal make. synthon instantiates the general form and rewrites the instantiated general form into a pseudo-WLN form. The pseudo-WLN form has adjacent number values combined and redundant ampersands eliminated, but the branch ordering does not necessarily follow all the WLN rules. The symbol in the second argument represents a general substituent, V , where the subscript is determined by the order mentioned in the coUect.aub8ts predicate (e.y., CABF and DE ). [Pg.240]
